I wouldn't want them to use uniform terms as none of the terms is strictly correct.

Silly article. The function dial presentation/discussion is "Nikon-Centric". Canon and Pentax both use mostly the same terms, i.e. Tv, Av, Sv, M, P. Pentax, Ricoh, Leica, and Hasselblad all have DNG as a alternate RAW format in-camera. "F2.8" or "f/2.8"? ISO or ASA/DIN? So whose are right or best to be adopted, Adobe, Canon, Leica, Nikon, Pentax, Sony? Most Photo terms are not silly, they come from the history of photography. If having to know a few arcane Photography terms bothers you, be glad that you are not a Chemist, Biologist, Physicist, Engineering, or in the fields of Medicine. Over the years I have been involved with Chemistry, Biology, and Photography, and Education. A lot of concepts and language involved!

Pre Burst

Features are functions but marketeers name the features, so theres no brand to brand commonality for typically common functions.

The author admits at the end that the whole thing was tongue-in-cheek, at least the winners and losers. But he also missed that Nikon is not internally consistent in the design and use of its Mode Dial. I'm guessing that's true across models or tiers by other makers, as well.

Another dimension of this problem, however, is the tendency of photographers to be way too concerned about the quirks of camera brands that they don't even use or own. Most don't even fully know and understand how to use their own stuff.

Finally, it was very humorous to me that the author tried to use automotive controls as an argument in favor of standardization. While it's true that some things are stabdardized, at leaston a regional basis, you really do need to check and verify whether you turn the wipers on by twisting a switch or by shifting the control stalk. If by shifting, do you move it up or down? And just where are the headlight and dimmer switches, exactly?

Wouldn't that be nice. But it's not likely to happen.

Sometimes oversimplifying can be counterproductive (i.e. ambiguous and therefore potentially confusing). My suggestions -

AF-SL = AF single lock.

AF-CT = AF continuous tracking - could be expanded to include AF-ET (AF eye tracking), AF-VT (AF vehicle tracking) etc.

Where metering is concerned, I don't think there's one word that can sufficiently describe centre weighted, especially since it is implemented in different ways. And nowadays we would have to differentiate between centre spot metering and focus point linked spot metering (any single word suggestions for that last one?).
