A Canon zoom lens question

I have recently acquired a Canon EOS 5D MIII with 6 lenses from my Landlord. In the lens set are 2 zoom lenses. The one that I keep on the camera at present is a 24-105 mm f4 L IS USM. My question is does the lens always extend when the camera is pointed down? I have 3 Nikon cameras with zoom lenses that do not extend when pointed down. The Canon equipment I got has had several owners I gather and I have no idea of the care the equipment was shown. My instinct is the guess that the answer to my question is that no the lens should not extend when the camera is pointed down. I would like to get a legitimate answer though.

Thank you for reading my text.

My 24-105L does not do this - perhaps yours is heavily worn.

It happened on an old 15-75 efs lens I had previously, it does not happen with the 'budget' 24-105 lens nor the 24-105 'L' lens I hired.

The older model, yes, it will 'creep' when held vertically. This is a weakness of many zoom lenses, even Canon's L-series from the older 'ver I' models. Most newer 'ver II' models have a lock switch to prevent this creep during travel.

The original Canon 24-105 f4L has a known problem with "Zoom Creep," the 24-105 Mkii has a zoom lock. Mine does this and I just live with it, not a big deal, or issue with the lens. I read an article where the lens was sent to Canon for repair and they were told that the lens is in perfect condition and that Zoom Creep cannot be repaired once it starts. https://foodphotographyblog.com/what-is-lens-creep-and-how-to-stop-it/

Look into Zoom Lens Band, or other such things on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=lens+band+s&crid=7EFA0PUZPGQD&sprefix=lens+band+s%2Caps%2C102&ref=nb_sb_noss_2

Good luck, I am use to it by now. Gary

Zoom creep common problem for 24-70L V1 and EF-S 18-200. Zoom band that Gary mentioned worked for us.

I have the EF 24-105 f/4L IS USM, ver 1 & yes, it does do that. Not that big of a deal to me though.

I have the original 24-105 lens and it does not creep. Am I just the lucky one?

Could be lucky. Could be you haven't used / traveled with the lens enough, held lens down, to loosen the lens and expose this weakness.

I cured my problem. I purchased some Lens Bands and put one on the lens. The trio I bought have different numbers on them. One is the F-stop, one is the focus points (ft/m), and the third is the focal length. I wear them on my wrist so they are handy when needed.

Try putting a piece of black electrical tape on the lens

The side of the lens from just under full extension down to closed position
