A wonderful voice and a truly early "cross over" example!

Pheasants Forever would love to see that shot!! Great capture!
I certainly can't argue with those selections, either (Julie and Ella could sing ANYTHING for me!!), but I sure do like Staton's version.
Fabulous!! She sings in the rare atmosphere. The only other songstress who even comes close with "Round Midnight" in my uneducated opinion is Dakota Staton...
Thanks for another trip down Memory Lane, Mark. To me May 14, 1998 was the day the music died...
About 100 years ago when I was Editor of our college newspaper, I went with "The Swinging Chips", Central Michigan College's jazz band to the Collegiate Jazz Festival at Notre Dame. Stan Kenton was a judge. Student bands from across the United States played, vocalists sang and participants listened. One afternoon a group of Texas cowboys showed up in their beat up pickup trucks and '49 Fords. They knocked the dust off their blue jeans, set up their instruments, and blew away the competition. They were the North Texas State Jazz Lab Band from Denton, Texas. I was standing next to Mr. Kenton when they finished. "What do you think about them turning professional," I asked him. He looked at me and simply said, "I would hang up my baton". He didn't. He wrote the album liner notes for the band's first recording. I still have and cherish the album... Thanks for reminding me about Stan Kenton!
Mark, you may be forgiven by posing some Ertha Kitt...

The title of this was supposed to be "Stan Getz's Last Concert".
Thanks for your effort.
Mark
That's funny -- the MJQ tape I was listening to is titled "The Last Concert" recorded 25Nov74 at Avery Fisher Hall. Another case of saving the best for last...
Stan Getz -- always a sure pick in the late, great annual Playboy Jazz Poll!!! Thanks Mark. As an aside, tonight I was listening to one of my Modern Jazz Quartet tapes....WoW!
Sassy Sarah!! And the trio isn't bad either!!!
