Great list! Some on here that I hadn't heard and I will listen to them all. Kenton's is an iconic version, and love that trombone choir!
Wes does my favorite instrumental version. Below is a link to the record and a link to a great performance filmed when Wes was in Europe. How cool it is to see Wes's unique thumb technique in that film version:

Thanks!! I noticed your first video was arranged by Don Sebesky. I saw the the wonderful trombone player with Maynard Ferguson in Birdland several times. The 12 piece band blew the roof off. One of my favorite scores was "Three Little Foxes" with Maynard, Don & Slide Hampton on valve trombones. I used to sit in the gallery for 4 - 5 hours nursing one drink. No money for more, but than did not limit the music. Great days!!!

Ciao,

Stan Getz on the Cafe au Go - Go album. I could swear that Astrud Gilberto sang it with him, but all I can find on line is a full instrumental version by Getz from that album, another instrumental byGetz and Joao Gilberto ( her husband), and Astrud singing it with another group. My vinyl copy is downstairs but I don't have a working turntable...
Great choice. I thinK I have that cut on a CD. Astrid & Getz are unbeatable!!
Thanks,
Mark
About 100 years ago when I was Editor of our college newspaper, I went with "The Swinging Chips", Central Michigan College's jazz band to the Collegiate Jazz Festival at Notre Dame. Stan Kenton was a judge. Student bands from across the United States played, vocalists sang and participants listened. One afternoon a group of Texas cowboys showed up in their beat up pickup trucks and '49 Fords. They knocked the dust off their blue jeans, set up their instruments, and blew away the competition. They were the North Texas State Jazz Lab Band from Denton, Texas. I was standing next to Mr. Kenton when they finished. "What do you think about them turning professional," I asked him. He looked at me and simply said, "I would hang up my baton". He didn't. He wrote the album liner notes for the band's first recording. I still have and cherish the album... Thanks for reminding me about Stan Kenton!

North Texas State has produced some of the greatest jazz bands and musicians for many years. Kenton was a fabulous leader and did so much for jazz. I surely miss those days!
Thank you for sharing that experience.
