OK. So not going is not missing much.

On the contrary. Not going is missing everything.

We had thought about doing that trip. We heard it was a sad and disappointing experience. Did you find it so??

I went as a photographer looking for interesting things to photograph.
Not at all disappointing. The societal ramifications due to the interstate
replacing Route 66 is profound. Some people might be bothered. I accept
that things change, sometimes good, sometimes not so good. I move on.

Interesting photographs. You can learn a lot just traveling the road.
Two years ago I rode Route 66 from Santa Monica to Chicago. The
trip was eye-opening.

Excellent article; thanks for the reference. Winogrand was and will always be controversial. That doesn't mean that none of his work is valuable.

Agreed. I do like a lot of his photos and have seen a number of them
in various exhibits in Washington.

. Most interesting was a comment on the fact that Winogrand left so many images undeveloped or unprinted: Winogrand didn't need to see his pictures anymore than Beethoven needed to hear the music he had written.
That's a real stretch and an insult to Beethoven. Scroll down this link to, at modern Winogrand unedited:

That is very nice. I belong to a weekly painting group, and I'm amazed at what some of these people can do. Me? I'm more a paint-by-numbers guy. It's fun, though.

You should post some of your paintings. I'm sure many people would be curious to see them and they may be better than you think.

The issue seems to be related to the support bars. The couch has a pretty good
4 inch mattress and everything is new. I slid a piece of plywood under the mattress
to cover the central support bars and gave it a try last night and that did the trick.
I could no longer feel anything from the bars. While a couch mattress is never going
to duplicate an expensive bed mattress it still can be made sufficiently comfortable.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Memory foam mattress. At leat 8 or 9 inches, thicker if you can.

The problem,as I see it, is how to store the foam mattress when not in use.

The fold out bed in my couch is not quite comfortable.
The couch is very comfortable and well made however
the mattress is not. I wonder if there is a foam pad that
could be added when needed and easily stored or if an
inflatable mattress would be better. Any good suggestions?

The expensive bit is using the navigation and google maps.
If you have the Google Maps app on your phone you can download
map areas using their off-line maps feature. Then you don't need
to be on-line to navigate with Google Maps.

This article is well researched and debunks one of the most
persistent photojournalist stories in the history of photography.
It is lengthy, but well worth reading.
