Garry Winogrand exhibit

The May 20 issue of The New Yorker reviews an exhibit of Garry Winogrand's work at the Brooklyn Museum. Interesting commentary on Winogrand's work. Only one photo is shown in The New Yorker but the discussion quotes other writers. Most interesting was a comment on the fact that Winogrand left so many images undeveloped or unprinted: Winogrand didn't need to see his pictures anymore than Beethoven needed to hear the music he had written.

That's a real stretch and an insult to Beethoven. Scroll down this link to, at modern Winogrand unedited:

Excellent article; thanks for the reference. Winogrand was and will always be controversial. That doesn't mean that none of his work is valuable.

Agreed. I do like a lot of his photos and have seen a number of them
in various exhibits in Washington.

I have searched for books of his photos, but what I find on Amazon are all very expensive. Museum catalogs, mostly. I think I like his attitude: if it's there, shoot it. He said " a photo is what the camera sees".

He and Beethoven--wow! Shaking my head.

I don't think the speaker (or writer) meant that Winogrand is Beethoven's equal, but that they had similar experiences with their work. Beethoven certainly could hear in his head what he was writing, and Winogrand saw what the camera saw.

The review in The New Yorker of the Winogrand exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum is in the May 13th edition. I erred in my first post.
