I saw this yesterday in the Washington Post. Photographer Dudley Greer spent six year driving 100,000 miles and taking pictures along America's highways.

I remember when I was taking photography classes at Maine Photographic School in Rockport ME, one of the photographer/teacher got a grant to photograph US Rt 1 from Key West FL to the end of the highway at the ME - Canada border. How cool is that paid to travel the entire east coast and take photographs... I never saw the end result of that work. BTW this was back in the early 80's...

Interesting photographs. You can learn a lot just traveling the road.
Two years ago I rode Route 66 from Santa Monica to Chicago. The
trip was eye-opening.

We had thought about doing that trip. We heard it was a sad and disappointing experience. Did you find it so??

I went as a photographer looking for interesting things to photograph.
Not at all disappointing. The societal ramifications due to the interstate
replacing Route 66 is profound. Some people might be bothered. I accept
that things change, sometimes good, sometimes not so good. I move on.

On the contrary. Not going is missing everything.

I don't know. I think he was dancing around the decay of the things you might have thought existed. Population shifts, deteriorated road, towns.
