The fold out bed in my couch is not quite comfortable.
The couch is very comfortable and well made however
the mattress is not. I wonder if there is a foam pad that
could be added when needed and easily stored or if an
inflatable mattress would be better. Any good suggestions?

Keep the couch and get a Murphy Bed for sleeping.
Memory foam mattress. At leat 8 or 9 inches, thicker if you can.
I used a cut to size piece of plywood under the mattress and that made it far more comfortable.

From my experience, fold-outs are not very comfortable but inflatables do offer a better night’s sleep...at least for a few nights.

Ditto on the inflatables. I have a bad back, (4 back surgeries) and when I've slept on inflatables I've gotten up in the morning with no back pain. Just put a blanket or a heavy bath towel
under the bottom sheet in the cold weather otherwise, the person sleeping on an inflatable will be cold.

The problem,as I see it, is how to store the foam mattress when not in use.
I thought this was going to be a joke. Never mind!

hinges............STAT !!
I found that if you put your head out into the room and your feet near the back of the couch it was like a different bed. Most of the discomfort comes from the frame that lines up on your shoulders with most of your body weight when you put your head in the couch area near the back of the couch. Head out, puts your legs over that frame area and it really works.

Two inch thick memory foam topper. I got a queen size one by Lucid at Home Depot for $69 and my too firm mattress has never been so comfy!

just use ordinary thick upholstery foam. Memory foam 'gives'...and you end up sinking into it. Buy a piece of 'bungy cord' and tie a loop slightly smaller than the rolled up foam. Slip it on when you roll it up....less hassle than tieing it every day.
To the OP:
If you’re still paying attention,
there are pull-outs available with inflatable mattresses. A Google search “sofa bed inflatable mattress” will get you started.
