After the recent price announcements and removal of support for older versions, there is quite a bit of discussion on the internet for replacements for Lightroom and Photoshop. I sometimes use Nikon NX-D (not so powerful but sometimes more than adequate) and Olympus Workspace. Both programs are Free. I also have the Correl products (Paintshop Pro and Aftershot)

The question for discussion is what programs do you like and what programs don't you like? Why? Are you going to consider replacing Lightroom?

I am not interested in the cheapest software but value for the dollar.

Given the cost and value if PS/LR subscription coupled with their integration with the Adobe mobile apps and constant updates, I can’t imagine a tighter solution.
Even if the charge inches up, as does everything, the CC package really has no competitors, given all it includes.

I took some shots of birds at my feeder today using single point autofocus. They turned out to my liking, mostly. Then I went out to shoot the sunset and never changed the AF setting. I'm sure you can imagine the results. Doh! Aah, well... I've got lots of other chances. It got me thinking though.

I'd be interested in reading about the faux pas of other members. I know mine isn't the most substantial or least common mistake. Please do share if you're so inclined.

I am a hobby photographer. My first DSLR was a Canon Rebel XT. Served me well for many years. Then the Canon EOS 70D came out and I bought it along with a wide angle 15-85mm which gave me great landscape and other stuff. I purchased a Canon telephoto 70-300 IS which just a few months ago lost its ability to focus. I used it a LOT. My Canon 70D recently lost the shutter ability. I sent it away for repair and it is now back and working beautifully. But both the wide angle lens and the telephoto are heavy and the camera itself is not small. This fall I am taking a 3-week trip through China and considering purchasing a Sony RX10Mark 4 due to its light weight, smaller less intrusive size and yet still has great features as my travel camera. If I get it a few months early I think I can transition to the Sony interface. Any comments or caveats?

If size and weight are the main criteria, I highly recommend the Canon G1x III. Same sensor as 80D.

I currently have Canon 80D with:
50mm 1.8 / 70-200mm f4 / 18-135mm IS USM.
My 50 & 70-200 are very sharp and I am thinking of replacing the 18-135 with either canon's 24-70 or 24-100.
I like shooting street photography, festivals, landscapes etc.
I appreciate your feedback.

You are getting some good advice. One thing to consider is that with your crop frame, 18mm is giving you a wider angle of view than you’ll get at 24mm. Both L lenses you are considering are great, but you would be giving up some coverage.

Background: I find myself home bound now being a full time (24/7) caregiver for my wife. This limits my photographic adventures to what I can see around my house and off my back deck. I have several long zooms but now want to explore macro photography. I have read through the macro section of UHH. I am a Nikon shooter and think that a 105 mm would be a good place to start. MY question is should I go big (Nikon 105 f2.8) now on sale for $810 or go more moderately with a non Nikon lens like Tokina or Tamron. I have been browsing used Nikons but these are still pricey. Camera will most likely be Nikon Df but AF-S would be nice to use on my crop Nikon (D5300) as well. Looking for guidance from experienced users. Thank you in advance.

Thus far Apple has left me confused concerning the following:
Eventually I get the message that my external drive for t/m backups is full & will begin deleting earlier backups. Accordingly I assume that if I export any image files, albums, or libraries to a different drive, disk or whatever, unluckily have desktop/macbook crash, those removed items could very possibly no longer be on my T/M backup drive? So is the best solution not to permit your T/M backup drive to be overwritten...changing the b/u drive instead? Your thoughts/remedies appreciated...

So I wanted to ask the folks here. Canon and Nikon released their first Full Frame Mirrorless bodies in late 2018 and they were decent starts for both companies, but were of course lacking compared to Sony's 5 year head start.

A lot of folks are claiming that Canon can never catch Sony but I disagree, especially since Canon has been doing Mirrorless, just not FF. At least their first model the EOS R has Eye AF where Nikon's did not and they are priced closer to Sony.

Now one other thing I wanted to share, I recently attended ImagingUSA 2019 and had a chance to have a lengthy chat with a man from Canon's CPS while my 6D2 was being serviced and although he couldn't give specifics, when I mentioned that I think Canon will surpass Sony in 18-24 months, he smiled and said "Wait till the world sees what we have coming, it will blow people's minds".

What do you think, will Canon catch and surpass Sony or is Canon gasping for air?

I was wondering how people save pieces of work that they are working on and want to go back to in the Develop mode of LightRoom. I realise that the picture etc is still in my library but what ways do people use to find them again. That is, a way to record which picture you are working on etc. I can create a separate collection for work in progress, or write the details down in a notebook - I won't risk my memory! - but I'm sure there are people who have developed systems that work for them that they may be willing to share.

Thank You.

That this even appears as a topic is further proof that "Apple is intuitive" is total crap. I have an android phone and transferring the photos is so simple how to do it just never appears as a topic. My wife has an iPhone. Moving her photos to her PC is a royal pain. You should not need and app or an intermediate cloud drive to move full sized copies to your PC. The free part of iCloud is pretty small if you want full size copies there, and after transfer deleting from iCloud is REALLY a pain. Don't know what the intuitive part is about any of it.

I do a lot of event photography where I walk the crowd. I typically use a Canon 5D3 with Canon 600 EX flash mounted on camera with Gary Fong modifier, using a ceiling bounce when there is a ceiling. 90% of my shots are in landscape. I know on-camera flash is not the best, and while I have a ST-3 remote adapter, I can't steadily hold the camera in one hand and the flash in another.

I've seen people use flash brackets and am thinking about buying one from Really Right Stuff - a WPF-QR2 - since I have a RRS camera L bracket. (Yes - I know they are not the cheapest option.)
Questions: Is moving the flash up 3 inches with a flash bracket going to make a difference? And, does anyone have experience with the RRS WPF-QR2?
Thanks...

For the ones that allow the flash to stay above the lens, your lighting will be same for horizontal and vertical. Don’t skimp on quality of bracket.
