After the recent price announcements and removal of support for older versions, there is quite a bit of discussion on the internet for replacements for Lightroom and Photoshop. I sometimes use Nikon NX-D (not so powerful but sometimes more than adequate) and Olympus Workspace. Both programs are Free. I also have the Correl products (Paintshop Pro and Aftershot)

The question for discussion is what programs do you like and what programs don't you like? Why? Are you going to consider replacing Lightroom?

I am not interested in the cheapest software but value for the dollar.

I use Photoshop CC, I don't use Lightroom. The price is kind of high for me as I only shoot about 1000 images per year. But well I pay up and use Photoshop. I don't see good alternative except the the free Nikon software which isn't as good but is OK for me as it's free.

If you didn't purchase CS6 and / or LR6, the Adobe subscription is the value for money offer.

Affinity is a good PS replacement program. I use, and will continue to use, the Adobe subscription version and more than get my money's worth. I shoot a lot as I take photography trips as often as possible, both short and long-term. I always import into LR and then use PS and other programs from there as desired.

I have loved PS Elements since first purchase of version 12. Compared to Corel Paintshop Pro (back in 2013), it is very well organized, easy to see and access all the tools, plus you have different workspaces for quick, guided and expert.

In expert mode you have layers, layer masks, blend modes. It easily accepts plug-ins from Topaz and Nik Collection.

PS Elements is a stand-alone, one-time purchase. Version 2019 is currently on sale for $70.

The only time you may run into an "obsolescence" issue is when purchasing a new camera and your current version of Elements is no longer supported and doesn't recognize your raw files. At that point choice is to convert the raw to dng in a free converter, or purchase a newer version of Elements.

There was no recent removal of support for older versions, most older versions have lost their "support" years ago (albeit they still can be used without problems)! And again, there also has not been an price increase!

I replaced Lightroom before Adobe switched to the subscription plan. I switched years ago to Capture One and continue to be satisfied. I would not switch back.

No interest from me in switching from LR/PS, as there is no price increase imminent. Jumping off the ship before it hits the iceberg does not increase your odds.

I subscribe to Adobe's LR/PS CC plan, but rarely use it (probably should drop it). I shoot Sony gear, so took advantage of Capture One's free version 11, recently purchase their perpetual license to version 12, and am loving it and heartily recommend it over LR/PS. Of course, Capture One, in reality, is only the LR portion of LR/PS, but it is IMHO much more robust than LR as a RAW processor, including much more in the way of localized edits.

That said, I would also recommend that you explore some of the very fine open source options. Darkroom is by far more robust than LR in terms of RAW processing. Gimp has for sometime been a more than adequate stand in for those tasks that you would delegate to LR. Lightzone, a free, opensource application, is also quite capable as a RAW file processor, also more robust than LR in terms of masking and localized RAW file edits.

Respectfully,

Caruso

It's ten bucks a month. The value is LR & PS.
You spend how much on a camera and all the related paraphernalia. LR&PS is the best bang for your buck.

Many of the alternatives to Adobe PS & LR offer 30 day free trials. When I decided to move, I did a little test driving on those programs about which I’d read good comments and reviews It is time well spent. Was very impressed — and pleasantly surprised — with the quality of today’s alternatives. Times have certainly changed since I started with PS years ago.
(FWIW, I decided to go with a DXO Photolab as my primary Raw developer for my Olympus images.)

When a lot of companies are claiming their product is as good as the gold standard product, why not just go with the gold standard product?

For the value, one can't beat Photoshop.

I have been using Photo Shop Elements since version 2 and updated to versions 5, 6, 8, 11, 12 and currently 14. I promised myself I wasn't going get another version of PSE. However, I have been checking Affinity lately and will probably bit the bullet and purchase it soon.
