A different view point. It is the perfect word. It can be used as a noun, verb, adverb and adjective. The only thing it cannot be used as that I can think of is either a conjunction or a preposition. My view is unless the word is used in a very negative and harmful manner it is okay with me and as long as its not used every other word. I grew up in New York in the fifties and sixties and language that is not considered politically correct today or appropriate today was extremely common place among everybody back then. People have just gotten too sensitive.

Thanks for all of your infor. on shooting the owl. It seems you really had to be innovative. I'veheard owls hooting around my house but have yet to pursue the action . Good shot.

The other issue was correct focus. Too far and dark for auto focus so I had to use manual focus. During the day that is fine. Night time is another story. Even with a flashlight it was dark and I could not be sure of the focus. I had to readjust the diopter adjustment to correct for my vision and I did this.by shooting into a lighted garage. Even then it was tricky focusing in that through the viewfinder it was still too dark to see really clearly. Multiple shots to get three good ones. By the way, the owl did not look like this to me. It was just a shadow. This camera is great. Who says it's the photographer, not the camera. In this case it was the camera.

The interesting thing was the correct exposure. I probably could have used a lower ISO. At the one I used, and if indicating perfectly exposed on the meter, the shot was just a big white blob. Speed was about 1 second. Since I was hand holding I did not want this speed for a small object at night so I kept cranking up (faster) the shutter speed until I got the exposure I wanted. I also did not want to go any higher in ISO.

Both Excellent shots. Looks like a Great Horned Owl to me.

Next time try "Hooting" to him/her & see if it replies.

Great birds, Owls.

Funny that you said that. That's exactly what I did to get him to look my way.

I heard some Hoo'ing and went outside with my handy 500 lumen Costco flashlight and there was an owl in the tree. Happens only a couple of times a year. I went upstairs and grabbed my 5DmkIII and threw on a Tamron 70-200 f2.8. Using my knees to hold and aim the flashlight, I cranked the ISO to about 12500 shooting in both manual focusing and manual exposure at 2.8 and varied around 1/25 sec hand held. Distance was about 200 feet away. Not the best but I got the shot. Did not want to risk losing the moment and opportunity by setting up a tripod etc. Hope you enjoy.

Except that a camera produces something positive whereas a gun's ultimate purpose is to destroy.

Always got to have somebody that tries to hijack the topic for a political agenda. The post has nothing to do with the politics of guns. It only has to do with technology and with the way people view the manufacture and technical comparisons of photography equipment and firearms and why people like both. Let's try to keep to the topics intended rather than interjecting unnecessary, unrelated and unappreciated comments.

I just got back from Iceland from a 10 day trip. I planned the whole trip myself and went with one of my friends and my son. It ran us about $3,000 each and that included car rental, lodging, food and other extra expenses. It was a great trip. I did all the planning myself. I did not use any companies. I did use Lonely Planet tour book and articles in International Travel News. If you would like to talk to me about the trip and my ideas about visiting Iceland please feel free to call me at xxxx. I would be happy to talk to you. It is just easier to talk and ask and answer questions back and forth rather than back and forth emails. The trip was fantastic. The country is like one big national park. The people are great and everybody speaks English fluently. Even better than we do.

Film will eventually go bad or you may not have a projector to watch it on. Dvd supposedly will last for many years. Also, if you have a big screen TV its just like watching on one of the old home roll up movie screens. Yes, you don't have the noise of the projector running but oh well.
