I heard some Hoo'ing and went outside with my handy 500 lumen Costco flashlight and there was an owl in the tree. Happens only a couple of times a year. I went upstairs and grabbed my 5DmkIII and threw on a Tamron 70-200 f2.8. Using my knees to hold and aim the flashlight, I cranked the ISO to about 12500 shooting in both manual focusing and manual exposure at 2.8 and varied around 1/25 sec hand held. Distance was about 200 feet away. Not the best but I got the shot. Did not want to risk losing the moment and opportunity by setting up a tripod etc. Hope you enjoy.
Both Excellent shots. Looks like a Great Horned Owl to me.
Next time try "Hooting" to him/her & see if it replies.
Great birds, Owls.
Thanks for sharing. Looks like Great Horned Owl.

What we will do for a rare chance at a great shot :-D . For what you had to go through for this shot not a bad shot. Photography would not be fun without some challenges. When we take on those challenges and come out with good shots it always fuels my passion for the hobby.
Thanks for all of your infor. on shooting the owl. It seems you really had to be innovative. I'veheard owls hooting around my house but have yet to pursue the action . Good shot.

Funny that you said that. That's exactly what I did to get him to look my way.

The interesting thing was the correct exposure. I probably could have used a lower ISO. At the one I used, and if indicating perfectly exposed on the meter, the shot was just a big white blob. Speed was about 1 second. Since I was hand holding I did not want this speed for a small object at night so I kept cranking up (faster) the shutter speed until I got the exposure I wanted. I also did not want to go any higher in ISO.

The other issue was correct focus. Too far and dark for auto focus so I had to use manual focus. During the day that is fine. Night time is another story. Even with a flashlight it was dark and I could not be sure of the focus. I had to readjust the diopter adjustment to correct for my vision and I did this.by shooting into a lighted garage. Even then it was tricky focusing in that through the viewfinder it was still too dark to see really clearly. Multiple shots to get three good ones. By the way, the owl did not look like this to me. It was just a shadow. This camera is great. Who says it's the photographer, not the camera. In this case it was the camera.

Very good, and fortunate. The last time I saw an owl other than in a zoo was when I was a preschool boy in Hungary.

By golly Mike, you did get the shot! The download on #1 is fantastic. I have heard one a few times in my life but I've never seen one. Lucky you. And it was not just the "camera". You knew good & well what you were doing.
Great encounter. Well done. Thanks for sharing.
