I'm having a hard time deciding which DSLR to get.
I had an Olympus E-510 which was cute and took nice images, but I no longer have it. Now I'm between Canon and Nikon. I decided against Sony and Pentax...and wonder why. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
I have been a photographer since I was 17 years old and have used most every brand of camera. Just being rediculously indecisive now at age 58.

Thanks to all,! Steve 8-)

For this reason, I think Canon is far superior.

As one of 4 kids, our family photos were "split up" and nobody was satisfied how it was done. I collected all of 'em up, scanned or whatever and put the collection back together and on cd. With 3 sons of my own, I've scanned in all of the early pics and provided each multiple copies of cd's so each has it all. The paper versions will go to the one who is most trustworthy of the 3.

I told this story once before on here but this is a good place to share it again. One day in Tucson, in a thrift store, I found 9 - 400 foot reels of 16mm film, the life story of a family from Connecticut that dated back to 1928. "Pa" had retired there, passed away and his estate wound up in that store. I, an old movie projectionist when younger, just happened to have my jeweler's loupe in my pocket and inspected the film. I saw that it was involving a family with a boy, a girl, and their dog. I bought the film and found that the boxes that it was sent for development to Kodak were there also so I had names and addresses to work with. I bought a projector and viewed the film. There were vacations at the beach, mom's graduation from prestigious women's college, Smith College in upstate NY. There was footage of a pre-Presidential campaign speech by Franklin Roosevelt, footage of the first Macy's Day Parade, footage of what looked like the Hindenburg blimp flying over NY City, and other stuff.

I decided to locate the people if possible and put that film back in their hands. In the event I couldn't locate the family, in the interim, I contacted Macy's about the film and they were missing that "first parade" and wanted it for their archives. The Roosevelt museum wanted the footage, etc. I agreed to make them copies but only after I had given up on locating the family which had moved to PA, MO, NY, and other places over the years with father's job which was a college professor. Not being able to focus on the girl due to name change via marriage, I concentrated on the boy. I put out feelers in genealogy forums, did direct mail, etc., and somewhere between 5 and 6 years out it paid off. I found the boy, now a lawyer in NJ and his sister, a school administrator in upstate NY and put the film in their hands, a very gratifying achievement, I must say. We need to watch out for each other and maybe go out of our way a little when we see a need to do so. Some folks won't care, others will be eternally grateful.

What a truly heroic effort and fabulous outcome! A wonderful story with a very happy ending. Thanks for sharing it again as I missed it the first time around...

Many years ago we had our last family reunion with my folk and siblings. I rented a video camera for the occasion. The main attraction was when my dad showed All the slides he had taken over the years. As each slide went up on screen I video's the full picture, then zoomed in on the individuals. The best part was that the video captured all the comments: Who it was, when it was, what occasion. All the memories and documentation in the audio. Now there is a tape backup of both the full slide collection and commentary on the background information. Still have the slides, but now I also have the personal memories.

I certainly think this video taping was a grand idea...!
I so wish I had had a video camera 20+++ years ago when my Dad did the very same thing at a family reunion... Now, all but one of those relatives, is gone. What a treat that would have been to have...

When, my wife's Daughter's Dad passed, he had taken pictures, (slides) most all his life... she pulled out the ones she wanted and tossed the rest. I could not help but think of the countless hours spent taking them, and in a few short minutes, the bulk of them all met the fate of the eternal dumpster. I too, could not help but feel a little sad, and thinking too, of all of my own pictures taken so carefully over a lifetime, someday meeting up with the eternal dumpster.

I think this has been going on since cameras first came along and technology and progress led to newer, easier, faster, and less costly ways of taking pictures.

I can only imagine the discussions of glass sensitized plates to the invention of films. Even in film we had the different choices of speed, and color or black & white film. Was B&W film the only pure way of doing photography, Why would anyone want color!

Growing up in film days, and before everything was all automatic, I'm glad I learned the things I did and their relationships. ASA, F/Stops, Shutter speeds. I try to get it as right as I can with my camera. It would be great if this always happened. But it doesn't for me. The Technologies of today with digital allow me to end of with a nicer image to look at. With film we dodged burned, and rubbed out enlargement paper while in the chemicals to warm and area up to make it develop faster...

Its all about progress and change, and it always will be...
Kind of like an old farmer using a horse drawn plow vs a farmer today using the modern fossil fuel driven equipment they use today... Is the purest with the horse drawn plow and better?

I guess we can all choose to forgo or embrace new technologies that come to us!

My Dad used an Argus C3, and some of the first Polaroid cameras that came about. I got into photography in the early 70's when lenses for cameras were changing from Screw Mount to Bayonet mount. I've had a lot of different cameras along my path, still, all with the same hope of taking a picture that makes me happy...

I've found that shooting inflatables with a .22 does the
job quite well. (Kidding, of course!)

I've bought a variety of non-Canon batteries, and so far nothing has blown up or leaked. They seam to give me all around the same charge. Even my original Canon ones do not hold the charge like they originally did though. I recently bought 4 batteries and 2 chargers from this company "Sterlingtek",
Since it and that came with free shipping.
It was around $75.00

I have been taking pictures for 39 years. Buying cameras and lenses all through this period. Its what I do for my fun my enjoyment, my entertainment, "my addiction".

I've never been paid so I am not a pro. There are always people I know who are better than I, and some that have more to learn to do what I can do.

Some people may like my images, others may not.

I don't know if I am an "Advanced Amateur" yet or not?

I guess you just need to find the label you are happy with.
Me, I take pictures, I am a "photographer."

Mostly the lens attached to one of my cameras is my 28-70 f/2.8 L. Depending on what I'm heading for to shoot, it could easily change.

I need some expert adv., Please.

I have a Canon 60D and an EFS 18-200mm lens.
I am itching to go and buy a Speedlight either the 430ex2 or the 580ex2. I did read all I could and still seek your input. I can afford either one but I am also price conscious.

I would get the 580EXII just for the FASTER recycling time alone!
All the extras it does are a bonus, and you may want some of them later.

Certainly if you have Canon gear that will work on the Canon, I would think it silly to jump ship to Nikon. (I might be a little prejudiced though!)If you were happy with Canon in the past, you will most likely be happy with a new one. If not, you might not be happy with the Nikon either though. Hold both in your hands and see how they feel and work for you. In the end, the photographer will be the most important part of any camera taking good -great - or amazing images.

I would totally love FastStone if it would allow me to add "tags" to images for cataloging images like Lightroom does. But its free, very simple, and user friendly.
