Unless I'm sadly mistaken, a lot of the colored filters out there were originally for the purpose of correcting various lighting situations in B&W photography. Red, for example can punch up the contrast in what would have been a ho hum B&W shot.

Now folks are using them to achieve different color casts and effects. Sometimes a pink, blue, orange, or tobacco grad can help with a lifeless sky, but must be positioned carefully so the rest of the scene looks as it should.

This mall cop said that they allowed people with cell phones to take pictures of there kids at stores in the mall. Just can not use a regular camera. My question is this, what is the difference between a cell phone picture and a picture taken with a regular camera. Are they not both pictrues??????

You're right, they're photographs, no matter the means used to take them. No one ever said that rules can't be stupid...and just because the mall cop is in a position of authority doesn't mean he has a full understanding of the rules, either. Personally, if the issue were important enough, I would go to the mall office and ask to see a copy of their policy concerning photographs, and not just take someone's word for it.

Outside a shop near Munich. Can anyone read German, I'd be interested in knowing what it says about Karl Marbler.

Mr. Falk, you win the grand prize, an all expense paid trip to Ugly Hedgehog, via connecting flights through keyboard, motherboard, monitor and modem! Congratulations, Sir.

Dachau, although it was not an official death camp, still put to death many thousands of people the Nazi regime thought undesirable, Poles, Russians, dissidents, political prisoners, Slavs, you name it. Most were worked to death.

All true, but can you study the sculpture and discover what was the inspiration for it? Hint...think about the concentration camp pictures and videos you've seen.

I took the picture on a visit to Germany in 1984.

This sculpture is at Dachau, outside of Munich. Can anyone tell what it represents?

My one and only grandchild, if you don't count my girlfriend's 6 grandkids who call me grandpa. She's Katherine Karina, adopted from the Ukraine in February, and she's 5. That's "grandma Marian" with her.

Lovely shots from Bahrain, well composed and exposed. The boat is not abandoned, just waiting for rain. Maybe that's the owner's solution to a boat being a "hole in the water to pour money into."

I would agree with the comment that cameras don't get in the way of good law enforcement, but sometimes photographers do. I worked almost 10 years as a photojournalist and saw photographers sometimes get in bad situations with police officers. Remember if you cooperate, they can make your job easier.

I have seen young graduates from college courses in photojournalism strutting around a wreck scene with the attitude that nobody can stop them. What they overlook is, all first amendments rights aside, when there is a wreck or crime scene, that particular little piece of real estate belongs to that investigating officer and you are at his mercy as to how close you can get to the scene.

Here is another factor. If it is private property, you have no assumed rights to be there. One night in the news room, we heard on the police scanner that there was a fire inside the local Walmart. The editor sends me out with my trusty Nikon. When I get there, guess what? The Walmart people will not let me through the door. It is private property, after all, and they are within their rights to bar photographers if they want to.

Here,s a tip. Do you have a good working relationship with police and other emergency officials? It surely does help. The fire dept. captain on the scene knew me and that I was working for the local paper. He told the Walmart people that he needed pics of the damage and guess what. I got in.

So if you are at a 'scene' and the ones in charge don't want you near the action, give them a break. If they see that you are cooperative they can be helpful. Over the years, I got to know most of the police, city, county and state, well enough that they would allow me onto any wreck or crime scene. But I can guarantee you that I stayed out of their way and that makes a big difference. I am sorry, but fresh out of college, you haven't had time to cultivate that relationship.

Maybe someone could also answer this question. At my local Mall, a security guard told me that camer's were not allowed, which I understand because of it being private property, but he said that a cell phone with a camera is allowed. Just what is the difference? A DSLR or a Cell Phone camera, don't they both take pictures?

Sometimes folks don't say exactly what they mean to say. I would have taken that to mean no photography by any means, but you are free to use your cell phone for it's other purposes.

Watch the hairspray on plastic lenses and frames! The solvent, (that's the flammable part), can damage plastic. Older glasses tended to be glass with metal frames, so no harm done.
