I have always used Back Button Focus.
My Nikon D3s has the button for it, My Nikon D-610 is set for the ael button for BBF.
Used it so long it is natural. When I pick up one of the Year Book Kids Camera's at school out of habit I reach for a BBF to find the kids are using shutter release only.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday Season.

Merry Christmas Jules,
Excellent Photos as always, Thanks for sharing.
I wish these Gyms would all go to LED lighting.
We have a couple in Our area, and the few times I have attended games there the lighting is great compared to the older Gyms.

Thanks for sharing.
Curious about Gear, and settings??? If shared it would help us with our attempts at Basketball.
Have a nice day, and a Merry Christmas Season.
Be safe, Be well.

Thanks Rick,
Yes I shoot with the Nikon 70-200mm most of the time. Some evenings my old arms are tired, and I use the Nikon 85mm f1.8 but find focus is not as fast as the 70-200mm f2.8.
I have a Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 but have never had good results trying to shoot basketball with it.
Thanks for Your comments.
Have a nice day, a Merry Christmas.
Be safe Be well,
Tom
Nice Photos Tom
In a very difficult setting. so many different light angles reflections, etc.
I think You did a good job. I really like the photo of the kid diving.

My first High School Basketball Game of the 2021 Season.
At my advanced age of 81 plus not sure I would be able to make Basketball games this year.
But, the ole saying "Have Walker then waddle to the Gym"
Waddle I did, and a bit out of practice for sure.
Caught a photo of Year Book kids with their cameras at the game. Always fun when they come up to me, and ask what I have my camera settings on. I always try to help as I can. Due to the Schools budget the kids are shooting with Cameras given to the Journalism Dept., @ the school. Most of the kids shoot in Sports Action Mode. All of their Camera's are Canon. I have donated a Camera to them, and some funds so they now have on 70-200mm f2.8 which is the prize lens for them to check out. The 70-200mm f2.8 is reserved for outside Sports Football, Soccer, LaCrosse for the most part. The kids are sharp, and want to shoot in manual which is tough for the equipment they have. I try to help some by with imparting my limited info.
Photos taken with Nikon D3s, Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens @ 1/800 sec iso 6400 or 8,000 for floor actions. Still photos of the girls I dropped shutter to 1/250sec.
Praying the old aching body permits me to keep waddling out to the local games.
I love our Youth, and enjoy watching them have fun.
Merry Christmas Season to all.
Be well, Be blessed.

Did You happen to know My Brother in Law Bob Douglas out of Huntsville, Ala.
He spent a lot of time on Kwajalein Atoll with the Missile program. As I recall He told me the project He worked on. The missile was to hit the target, and knock it out into deep space.
And I believe He worked in the GPS Guidance System. At the time He was employed by the Army.
He spend most of his Career in the Space Programs. Sadly He passed away in May 2012.
Just curious if Your paths crossed.
Tom
