Yes, sport jacket and dress pant. Since the photographer is going to be the one moving around from place to place, a tie shouldn't be nessissary.

What is a tie? :) I haven't seen one of those in years. Aren't we glad we don't have to have pockets full of film rolls? :)

All magicmomentpics wanted to know was how much a lens was worth and here these "I'M CORRECT" twirps take off on some spelling bee making a major issue out of nothing. What harm did this person do spelling the word the way they wanted to? A very clear example of why the world is so screwed up with "critics" like these around.

Eleven pages and no Tarkus. Here Tarkus! (whistle, whistle, whistle). TARKUS! Must've gone the way of his p&s. Or he's out tryin' to take "decent photos". Good luck Tarkus.

I can't wait to hear the responses to this one. Status issues will be thrown into the dirt. Chick magnets will dwell among those in the dirt. What is it that you guys gain from all of the stuff you drag around as opposed to my new Sony P&S with the advanced electronics? I certainly don't get it, but I'm sure that you are about to bitch at me about the old school stuff.

I liked the camera so well that I bought a second. Let the sentimental technology thoughts fly ... He went that away ===>

So are you saying you believe cameras such as Canon's
5D MK III and 1D X, or Nikon's D 800 do not utilize "advanced electronics", and should be considered "old school stuff" and sentimental technology?!?

No knowledgable, clear thinking individual could possibly make statements like that and hope to be taken seriously.

But to offer an answer to any reasonable portion of your question "Why Do You Drag Around Expensive Photo Gear?"... well a lot depends on what you shoot.

If you mainly shoot kids in the backyard, photos of your pets, vacation snaps, scenics, birthday parties and other similar situations, then a P&S will likely be fine for most of those.

If however you shoot action such as sports or wildlife (as I do) then a P&S is just not going to cut it.

Will your "advanced electronics" little Sony get these shots I've posted here?
Maybe, but probably not.

In any case since you have never posted *any* photos here you have taken recently, we have no way to know if you are any good and know what you are doing, and you are in no position to criticize other photographer's choice in gear.

I'm very sorry if my comments on pricing your work below minimum wage rates has upset you. I was in no way seeking to comment on the quality of the photographs you produce. My comment was simply meant to point out that $40 for two hours work is not a living wage, and that anytime someone is offered services at that rate it deprives those who are attempting to make a living by providing the same services from providing themselves with that living. Here's my argument in a nutshell. Most really successful businesses run at a net profit (that's what you get to keep to eat on after all expenses are deducted) of somewhere between 8-20 percent. So to make the math easy lets say your costs are low and you're making 20% net. That leaves You making $2 an hour net. In an 8 hour day that's a grand total of $16. Let's assume you're three times as good as most successful businesses. Then you're making $48/day. This assumes your so jammed packed with work that you are snapping away 8 hours a day. I'm sure you can see where this is going. it's just not a living wage.

Did you pay attention to my post?

I am not a business, don't take on clients and hardly ever ask people for money when I take their pictures. I usually do it all for FREE as it is my hobby and I love the practice. I asked for $40 those time because there were costs I had out of pocket.

Before you go off on how I am ruining the profession of photography, how $40 breaks down when running a business it is best to make sure you know what you are talking about and the audience you are trying to deliver the message too.

Once I deceide to open a business and get past the building of my portfoilo (at a discounted portfoilo building rate) my sessions fees will be set accordingly with my local market, talent level and desired profit margin.

ummm I found his post rude, to put it simply. I work hard at making sure I turn out nice looking images, I work hard at learning something new at least once a month and putting it into practice, I work hard at growing as a photographer.

I am not a professional, never claimed to be one. He has no idea what I spent out of my own pocket for this "session" for a friend, for him to imply that I am killing the profession of photography is just foolish.

As I and snowbear said, it's the fauxographers that are killing the professional of photography, not those of us that are trying to learn all we can and are still thinking that maybe one day we will hang a shingle and start looking for clients. But in the mean time, I practice and some times *gasp* I practice on friends and their children.

* I would love to see some of Orville H. Brettman's work, since he was so quick to judge me and my work as ruining his profession of photography.

My 2 film cameras, lenses and related equipment are pretty much packed in a camera bag and ready to go at any time. My digital camera, lenses and related equipment are kept in my sling bag and also ready to go at any time. Anything extra is kept in a cool, dark closet.

I just purchased a Manffroto 294 from B&H with a QR ball head. $140. out the door. Check 'em out. They have an "extensive selection" of tripods.

Tripod choices, just one more time, please?

I am looking, hoping for a walking around carbon tripod for a trip to Egypt and Jordan. My aluminum is just too shaky in wind. Bottom line is that I can only spend $200 or maybe a little more (ever had your wife threaten to kill you “if you spend one more dollar on camera stuff?).

OK, I have heard, multiple times, “you can’t go wrong investing in an expensive Manfrotto, Gitzo, or Benro; an investment for life.” However, there MUST be some lesser manufacturers that can produce a similar product without paying for the name. So does anyone have a specific recommendations to buy, or stay away from, some of the “cheeper” manufacturers like: Lumiere Tech, Sunpack, Detai, Flashpoint, Rocketfish, Smith Victor….

Thank you.
dave.

Really like your work and your site. Fantastic stuff! My mind doesn't work as yours does. I've tried abstract and surreal but I'm stuck in realism.
