Tripod choices, just one more time, please?

I am looking, hoping for a walking around carbon tripod for a trip to Egypt and Jordan. My aluminum is just too shaky in wind. Bottom line is that I can only spend $200 or maybe a little more (ever had your wife threaten to kill you “if you spend one more dollar on camera stuff?).

OK, I have heard, multiple times, “you can’t go wrong investing in an expensive Manfrotto, Gitzo, or Benro; an investment for life.” However, there MUST be some lesser manufacturers that can produce a similar product without paying for the name. So does anyone have a specific recommendations to buy, or stay away from, some of the “cheeper” manufacturers like: Lumiere Tech, Sunpack, Detai, Flashpoint, Rocketfish, Smith Victor….

Thank you.

Manfrotto for life...I have had one thirty years. For travel, get a small solid monopod....Manfrotto is a bit heavy unless you have easy access.

With Manfrotto, you are getting more than a name...you buy only one, period....for life and you will even pass it on to your great grandchildren. Mine fell off a jeep at sixty mph and survived...

I'm looking also.. Just to let you know I bought a cheap one so I wasted $100.00 already. With 6 to 10 pounds resting on the tripod it shakes worse than if I held it myself. I have to hang my weight on the tripod to keep it from shaking.. Don't go cheap like me or we'll both be in the same boat......Good Luck.....

My wife loves her Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 tripod. Light weight and sturdy. It also has 4 sections to fold up short to attach to her pack.

Cheap, light or stable. Choose any one or two. You won't get all three.

Cheers,

I just purchased a Manffroto 294 from B&H with a QR ball head. $140. out the door. Check 'em out. They have an "extensive selection" of tripods.

For a journey to a sometimes unpleasant foreign area, I would recommend a tripod that you wouldn't get too upset if it were lost or stolen.

I have a $100 Rocketfish from BestBuy that is not the lightest guy out there, but it is pretty solid. I don't schlep it all over the place, so lightness was not so important to me. Steadiness, and good height without the center column going up were.

What sort of "sometimes unpleasant foreign area" had you in mind?

Over the last 30+ years, I've used tripods on three continents, and never lost one or had one stolen yet. Where are these gangs of international tripod thieves?

Cheers,

R.

Hi paddkeheaddave: I've seen Bogen/Manfrotto tripods for under $200 on Amazon. I'm guessing if they have one there at that price KEH, B&H or even Adorama might have better quality used ones for that price or possibly even less. Shoulf be worth checking out. I'm still using my old Ambico aluminum one I've had for years, fortunately it still does what I need it to do.

You want a $200 carbon fiber tripod? They are out there, but the wind will blow it over in a heartbeat! Stick with a GOOD aluminum set of legs in that price range and you will have something to keep and use forever.

Hi, How much is your camera and lens worth. If they are lower priced equipment than buy an inexpensive tripod but if you have some expensive gear you want something stable. Buy once or buy again after you find out what you bought doesn't do the job. Have fun and keep shootin'. Mike
