I think a copy of this should be sent to Assad. It would bore him into inactivity. It certainly has me. Yawn

The British Government voted last night not to get involved in any military action in Syria. I guess the best thing about that is that it will prevent America dragging us into another of its ill conceived conflicts.

Never had a problem with a printer after a cartridge had run out of ink. After all in the old days that was the only way to tell that a cartridge was empty.

I used to be quite proud of the fact that I was able to remove a used cassette of 35mm film from my camera and replace it with a new one, one handed. Its the only skill I feel I've lost in the digital era

Jeff Revell, in his excellent book on using the Canon 600d recommended the Canon EF-S 18-200mm lens. On his recommendation I bought one. Whilst it has limitations I have been happy with it. In some appalling conditions of both dust and later torrential rain where the last thing you would want to do us change a lens, I was quite happy with most if the results from both ends if this lens.

Golf is only boring to those who don't play it, photography nevers seems to be boring to anyone as unlike golf, almost everyone takes pictures with the majority admitting they are no good at it but not caring either, which is kind of nice.

This post has made me realise that I am probably a far more confident golfer than I am a photographer. I never notice what clubs other golfers use and am utterly convinced that by knowledge skill and research, I have the clubs that are the best for me. However when I see people with cameras, I cannot help but check the make, model and lenses they are using.

I have a Pentax Optica WS11 that I keep in my golf bag for various shots including slow mo movies of golf swings. I recently loaned it to somone who wanted to take a couple of still shots and I had forgotton to set it up for this. The outcome is that I have a recorded movie of the image on the SD card that I transferred to the computer, but have no idea if it is possible to get a still image from this slow mo movie. Any help of advise would be greatly appreciated.

Great stuff, you have had some excellent advice and I think one of the greatest assets of this site is the help and assistance that can be given to people like yourself by those more experienced. Please let us see some of your reults in due course

Good point about the viewfinder Griff, but I found you had to compromise so much on other facilities on those I saw that did have a viewfinder, I was almost forced into buying one without a viewfinder to get decent facilities. I would be interested to hear of a high spec. point and shoot with a viewfinder these days.

I bought a Canon SX240 last year, mainly to carry round in my golf bag for odd shots here and there while playing golf, also to take SloMo video of golf swings. My wife also uses it for all manner of point and press occasions. I do have to say that it has exceeded by far all expectations I ever had of it. It is quite brilliant.

Having been a UK Police Officer for over 30 years, I am the first to recognise there are always going to be a few bombastic and domineering officers who have forgotten (or never even learned) that their primary role is the prevention and detection of crime, not antagonising the public. They may also have seem too many videos where someone always seems to want to put a hand across a photographer's lens.
The bottom line is that to take any action an Officer must 'have reasonable cause to suspect' the actions of a photographer fall into the category of a criminal action. The Met guidance is good and I suspect most officers in other parts of the UK are unaware of its contents.
The main problem with these arrogant officers is that they will try to ratchet things up. They will try to get a reaction that they will claim amounts to disorderly conduct or conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace and in the worst cases start arresting people. Unless you are causing an obstruction they have no right to move you on either, but a confrontation over this can lead to arrests as well.
Such officers in my experience are few and far between, but the damage they do to the image of the UK Police image is massive.
My advice to anyone is always to remain very calm and never get confrontational in the way the officers are. Ask politely what legislation the officer is using to support his demands and what is the evidence he has to indicate you are contravening it. A copy of the met document is always good to have as well.

Great shots, thanks for posting them. The reminded me of a guy in the UK who used to demolish chimney stacks without explosives. The technique was to remove large sections of brickwork at the base if the stack on the side it was intended it would fall. As the brickwork was removed it would be replaced by very strong supporting timbers. When enough bricks had been removed to ensure a collapse, the timber was set on fire and of course the stack fell as the timber burned away. It was impossible to predict exactly when it would fall, but the massive fire, with all the smoke and flames going up the chimney stack made it look as though it was fully operational right up to the moment it fell. The whole image was most impressive.
