Debating between the two, Anyone have experience with one or the other?
It’s to replace my e-620 for use with the 50-200 f2.8-3.5
Thank you

Horses for courses, I love VR, whether or not it’s need, it does no harm, but yes fast premium glass wins out, a slower shutter speed is always the last resort, that’s where VR really shines.
Nice pic! I was using a Coolpix 5000 and a Fuji S1 pro back then, no VR, and I still love the pics outta those tools

It’s great for me, I leave it on it does no harm, but if light is low, or anytime a shutter speed drops below the whole 1/focal length.

And I used the 55-300 on it with a battery grip, balanced sweetly and did great work

By the way, I had a d40 and loved that camera, that’s when I learned that pixels don’t matter so much😐

What is a decent 70-300 mm Telephoto lens for Nikon D40?

Prefer refurbished as I am still learning to get off auto and I do not take very many pictures at this time.

Saw something that also says Tamron lens are compatible?

Just would like to be able to take macro of bugs and zoom pictures of moon and such.

Currently own 18-55 kit lens, 50 mm lens, and 55-200.

Just trade your 55-200 for a 55-300, perfect for you

I’m starting to consider my next lens acquisition and looking for recommendations from the UHH hive mind.

DX mount only. I don’t want the added weight and expense of FX.

I’d like to have a max reach of at least 300 mm, longer is even better.

Prefer speed to zoom range. My Nikon 18-70 is my walk around and a tele zoom starting at about 100mm would be ideal.

I’m happy with Nikon, Sigma, and Tokina brands. Would also consider some Tamrons.

VR is a requirement.

Don’t need the latest and greatest models. I’m happy buying used.

Ideas, anyone? 1,2,3, Go!

Used? there's one that stands out to me, 80-400VR, old one. Slow focusing, but darn used it's a steal, and man its got a gold ring around the lens too!

The whole point is that you do not need the latest and greatest camera to take good pictures, just learn how to take pictures. Spend money on lenses, they last.

And your point is? Are you just wanting to show photos in the wrong section? Don't like the gallery section?

That didn’t occur to me, but someone wanted me to post the full size ones, I’ll take them down

Those are nice looking photos. But maybe you could provide a link to a high-res version?

What looks good a 4" x 5" doesn't always look good at 16" x 24".
That may or may not matter, depending on what one plans to do with an image.
But a 4" x 5" print stuck on the wall is kinda dinky--a little underwhealming.

A photograph is an object, not a disk file.

Figured out what I did wrong, thanks. I,m on my phone, better stuff on my computer at home, but being old these will do

Ok great you have a D850, good for you. And lets see here, the Nikkor 24-70 f2.8 isnt sharp, is the Tamron Sharp? And all you take are snapshots.
I'm sorry but its not the camera, its not the lens, its you!
Learn to use the tool, 6 good megapixels will do a nice 11x14, I've got great pics using a Fuji S-1 pro with an old 24-120 pre VR, I'm no pro, but I'm proud of my work.
I think its kind of like buying your own conch shell with nothing to say (Lord of the Flies)
The following were taken either with S-1 Pro or Coolpix 5000, 3.5 and 5 mgpxls
But if you're good! (David Pine) need Hyper prints or cropping Mega megapixels the D850 will certainly be more than enough

It's a bit like putting skinny tires on a BMW M5. It will work but you definitely can do better.

Nailed it! The Tamron is ok, but sheesh man you bought the beast of beasts why put an OK lens on it.
I’m reminded of the review of the Yugo, “for people who are serious about being poor”. Buy the finest glass, you bought the finest camera
Are you broke now that you spent all your money on the D850? Then go with a fine used prime, you’ve got lots of room to crop

I have a love/hate relationship with my job. I work retail and I "hate" it; however, I teach fly casting as part of my job. The late Lefty Kreh made a comment that I took to heart very early on as a fly casting instructor; Lefty's comment, "You want to share your knowledge, not display your knowledge." I got to help a scout troop this summer get their fly fishing merit badges; it was one of the most personally rewarding and humbling experiences for me. About 15 scouts, and when it came to the fly casting part, I invited all the parents to join in as well. I also get to teach ladies how to cast a fly and I love teaching them because they listen. I've had a few "ringers" come for casting instructions as well. I choose to share my knowledge on fly casting and try to leave everyone with a positive impression. One of my coworkers was a certified FFF casting instructor; he liked to show off his knowledge, after all he invented fly fishing. My point, when I stood up and commented: "I really don't like this Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 lens.".........some hedgehoggers shared their knowledge while others displayed their knowledge. THANK YOU to all who shared their knowledge; those who displayed their knowledge............you stepped right into the tar pit, you had to set the record straight, you assumed way too much about my post and about me.............you know next to nothing about me. In a way I was a "ringer". The lens is off the d850 and back in its Nikon packaging, just waiting for customer service where it came from to get back from their holiday. The d850 has been offered to a close friend who is my photography mentor as payback for all he has shared with me over the years. Sooner him than a stranger.

Well I hope the new owner appreciates the camera as much as you did not. Why didn’t you give him the worthless not sharp crappy lens also? Now what is he going to do?
Fly fishing isn’t some mysterious activity like so many make it out to be. Built my first rod at 12, throw the line not the fly and keep your elbow bent, let the back cast straighten boom you’re done, That’s all, the rest is practice.
If I seem passed about this it’s because I get the sense that this whole thing has been a “Brag”, someone complaining that their multi thousand dollar system isn’t sharp, doesn’t work well etc, yet your pictures illustrated no artistic value. As snap-shots there was no “decisive moment”, no illustration of the beauty you perceived they were like nothing more than what was there, not what you “saw”.
So many of us here can do so much more with so much less.
