I have a love/hate relationship with my job. I work retail and I "hate" it; however, I teach fly casting as part of my job. The late Lefty Kreh made a comment that I took to heart very early on as a fly casting instructor; Lefty's comment, "You want to share your knowledge, not display your knowledge." I got to help a scout troop this summer get their fly fishing merit badges; it was one of the most personally rewarding and humbling experiences for me. About 15 scouts, and when it came to the fly casting part, I invited all the parents to join in as well. I also get to teach ladies how to cast a fly and I love teaching them because they listen. I've had a few "ringers" come for casting instructions as well. I choose to share my knowledge on fly casting and try to leave everyone with a positive impression. One of my coworkers was a certified FFF casting instructor; he liked to show off his knowledge, after all he invented fly fishing. My point, when I stood up and commented: "I really don't like this Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 lens.".........some hedgehoggers shared their knowledge while others displayed their knowledge. THANK YOU to all who shared their knowledge; those who displayed their knowledge............you stepped right into the tar pit, you had to set the record straight, you assumed way too much about my post and about me.............you know next to nothing about me. In a way I was a "ringer". The lens is off the d850 and back in its Nikon packaging, just waiting for customer service where it came from to get back from their holiday. The d850 has been offered to a close friend who is my photography mentor as payback for all he has shared with me over the years. Sooner him than a stranger.

Good choice on where the camera is to be sent.

I missed your original post. A friend uses the Nikkor 24-70 as one of her main lenses while shooting weddings; she loves that lens. You obviously have your reasons for not liking the lens and I don't know what they are but since you sent back the lens and gave away your D850, I'm going to guess it has something to do with size and weight, since both camera and lens are excellent photo tools. Personally, if I were doing photography while fly fishing, I'd definitely want something a whole lot smaller than a 24-70 on a D850.
To be honest, I suck at fly fishing much to the other halfs dismay, but I'm pretty good at good old fashioned casting.

Since I never used the 24-70mm lens and reading your post I gain no knowledge of it. Can't see where you share your knowledge.

I love fly casting. I read Lefty's book and others. I practiced and practiced. Double hauling is a breeze. I got bore with casting with my strong hand and learned to cast with my off hand. It becomes very handy when the wind blows from the right side. If you have a website, please supply. Cheers.

I love to fish for native trout in mountain streams/Western North Carolina. Here is a friend with a small catch-n-release.

Kind of a lot to dabble in photography with a $5000 outfit, and extravagant to give away a $3000 body, but everyone has their ethic. Maybe next time, try an Olympus Tough while in the water, or a D5600 while in the woods.

What a shame.
The 850 is by all reviews, a great camera; and any version of the 24-70 is hugely compatible.
And, personal sensitivity and taking oneself too seriously has no place in this forum

I missed the original post. I believe the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 is a great piece of optic but I also know it is not for everyone. Other photographers prefer a longer reach and they opt for the 24-120 f4 VR, another good lens. I use the 28-105 f3.5-4.5 -D with my D610.
As you know, we select lenses according to the use we intend. Many times that lens that was selected while in use it does not satisfy our needs as we thought it would. Optical excellence does not mean perfection.

The sharing of your passion with the youth is quite admirable and fulfilling and more than likely an experience that they will hold on to fondly forever. On another note, my favorite movie fishing scene was Chevy Chase in "Funny Farm".

Fly fishing is the funnest way to catch big fish. I had my fill of stream trout in SW Wisconsin. Then I met a guy whose passion still is hunting muskies with a fly rod and I got hooked! I have a couple dozen muskies on the fly to my credit, still chasing that elusive biggin' though. The best days for hunting them are approaching, cold/crappy weather up north, rain and snow mix, it gets them going.

I have both the 24-120 f/4 VR and the 28-105 f3.5-4.5 AF-D. I use them on my D810. My 28-105 is significantly sharper to my eyes up to around 85mm, but I replaced it with the newer lens for the VR feature and slightly greater reach. Is there a perfect lens? I think they all have some faults, some that might be important to some people. (I'm not posting pictures because I'm on vacation in the UK at the moment without access to most of my pictures.)

Well I hope the new owner appreciates the camera as much as you did not. Why didn’t you give him the worthless not sharp crappy lens also? Now what is he going to do?
Fly fishing isn’t some mysterious activity like so many make it out to be. Built my first rod at 12, throw the line not the fly and keep your elbow bent, let the back cast straighten boom you’re done, That’s all, the rest is practice.
If I seem passed about this it’s because I get the sense that this whole thing has been a “Brag”, someone complaining that their multi thousand dollar system isn’t sharp, doesn’t work well etc, yet your pictures illustrated no artistic value. As snap-shots there was no “decisive moment”, no illustration of the beauty you perceived they were like nothing more than what was there, not what you “saw”.
So many of us here can do so much more with so much less.
