What is a decent 70-300 mm Telephoto lens for Nikon D40?

Prefer refurbished as I am still learning to get off auto and I do not take very many pictures at this time.

Saw something that also says Tamron lens are compatible?

Just would like to be able to take macro of bugs and zoom pictures of moon and such.

Currently own 18-55 kit lens, 50 mm lens, and 55-200.

Just trade your 55-200 for a 55-300, perfect for you

No zoom will do macro! However, many will do close ups very nicely. You have to look at the closest focusing distance of the lens you are considering.

Re: Franswahill, lens for Nikon D40. One of my cameras is a Nikon D40, and I agree. It is a great camera. The Nikkor 70-300 af-p dx vr is a good lens, but it is not a macro lens. I purchased the lens new, grey market for around $150. My panasonic lumix FZ300 camera costs $400 new USA version. It has a 600mm zoom lens which includs a macro lens. The lens has a steady F2.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range and shoots raw as well a jpegs. Davidb1879.

I love my D40, and wish it still worked. The 55-200 will focus pretty close, then, I just crop. (The 18-55 can focus real close as well!)

I used the Tamron 70-300 on my D40 for years. It now sits on my D3000 and the old 18-55 is on my D40. The Tamron is more than adequate for any camera (in my humble opinion). You can also use it for closeup photography (although it is not a true macro lens). It is very reasonably priced for brand new .

In May I got a D5600 to replace my D40 but have been debating rather to keep it or sell it. I have a 55-200 VR used on the D40. Worked great for me, but the 18-300 is my next lens for the D5600.

Even though we have other much more advanced and heavy Nikon bodies, the used D40 we bought from Adorama is a lightweight joy to use. If you have have nerve damage or arthritis, or smaller hands, it's a nice body, but you have to be selective on the lenses. Take a look at Ken Rockwell's lens compatibility chart to check for older lenses that will fit up. You'd be surprised, that what Ken says is often correct; despite everything that Nikon or the compatibility chart says, the D40 often will work with many of the older (and much cheaper Nikkor) lenses, as long as you like manual photography. Sometimes the camera never got that memo...
We use a 35-135mm AiS with it, paid about $50 for the body, and $75 for the main lens, but as long as you do your research, there are others. Good thing is that Adorama usually has Used D40's in very good condition for $100 and less. Ordered ours to give to a relative and wound up keeping it; it's not a speed demon, but it's oh so much fun. Will get another if it passes on. sv.

Get The Nikon 70-300mm AF-S VR for your camera, It's an excellent choice. Can be bought for around $300 refurbished. One of the best zoom lens for the price nikon ever made. I used it for years as my birding lens. That's Birds in Flight. If you go to my back post I have posted hundreds of shots with the lens, 2014 and before, I use the 80-400mm now.

I had the D 40 with a Tamron 18-270 mm lens . I had an accident fell off a ledge and by by camera and lens. I got a D 5100 with a Tamron 16-300 mm I wanted an all around lens. There are macro used lens ebay also extension tubes. Love that lens.

The 70-300 AF-P DX will not work on a D40 or on most older Nikon DSLRs. Not even D7000. Not even manual focus!
