Like the way you think! Sometimes we need to rationalize our purchase decisions.

My nephew's wedding will be here soon and I own a Nikon D750 along with the 24-120 f/4 lens. Should I consider purchasing a 70-200 f/2.8 or do you think what I have is sufficient?

I believe NIKON just yesterday has the 70-200 2.8 on sale at 600.00 off

[quote=MT Shooter]You have a pretty good setup now, the D750 is excellent in low light and the one stop of light you lose over an F2.8 lens can easily be made up by simply bumping your ISO up

I don't care about DSLR vs Mirrorless vs View, etc. I buy what meets, or exceeds, my needs. When it comes to spending over $300.00, I demand a camera which has two memory card slots. The 4.16233 ounces (118 grams) difference between the mirrorless Sony A9, and the Nikon D750 is not going to break my back, or dislocate my shoulder, as I carry the Nikon around instead of the Sony. I also want: great low light capability, compatibility with lenses I already own, and a few other things. If two cameras offer about the same features, I go with the one costing less. If one costs more, but provides more features / functions, I ask myself whether those features / functions are something I really need...or, at least, could greatly use...and whether they are-to me-worth the added cost. I am already into Nikon, so I would prefer to wait for an F-Mount Nikon mirrorless system....if such ever comes out. The Nikon Z things are not F mounts, and only have one memory card slot, so I am not buying into them.

The Canon R things are also one card slot items, so they are out. The Sony A9 has dual card slots, and many other nice features, but would mean spending around $30,000.00 to get into in a serious way....new camera, lenses, etc. I might consider that at some point, but not yet. I will give Nikon a bit longer to come up with an F mount mirrorless system. Failing that, they would have to upgrade the Z system, and work the bugs out, before I considered that. I may get into a used Sony A7III system. That would cost less....used camera, used lenses, etc. I am not devoted to DSLR, Mirrorless, or anything else. I exercise some brand loyalty, for the sake of familiarity, and accessory compatibility. If I switch brands, and have to get an entirely different system, I want to manage such in an affordable manner while still meeting my needs. I am not ready to switch yet, but may be in a year, or two. I don't follow fads just to follow fads...but I do not resist change just to resist change. Manufacturers, Marketers, and Retailers hate me. I am NOT a good, little, Peer Pressure Slave. I have a mind of my own, and I use it....to satisfy MYSELF.

Unfortunately if you are waiting for NIKON to develop an F mount mirror less I don’t believe that day will ever arrive. They have made the F mount adapter which works excellent with my F series lenses. Short of the D850 or D5 there is nothing in the NIKON offerings that are even close to the Z series. The recently released firmware upgrade for the Z series is outstanding upgrade for the camera. Regarding the dual card feature how many film cameras had dual film capability.

Z7 or D850

I Have both. Love them both. Nikon just released the new firmware update today which has eye detection af as well as better lowlight focus. I will download today once I get off work. I would say that right now I believe the Z7 to be the way to go. Nikons new 24-70 2.8 for the Z cameras may be the best 24-70 the have ever made. Incredibly sharp and fast.

I just returned to photography after a long layoff. So I am starting over. Buying and learning all over again. My first move was the Nikon Z7. I got the standard 24-70 F4 lens which took me all of an hour to be dissatisfied with.

So as an ex-Lieca user I love Zeiss lenses. The current lines appear to be OTUS and MILVUS. So far I am thinking Milvus is better. Yet poking around I see the PLANAR and DISTAGON lines as well.

Can someone advise me on which line to go for using a mirror-less, full frame, high MP camera like the Z7?
Thanks

NIKON recently released the 24-70 F2.8 for the Z bodies. I too had the F4 kit lens when the camera was first released. My honest opinion is the new 2.8 is probably the best 24-70 NIKON has ever built when paired with the Z body. Well worth the price.

My 24-70 2.8 S for the Z7 arrived Thursday at my local store YM Camera in Youngstown Ohio. Nikon hit it out of the park with this one. The focus is unbelievably fast and the images are tack sharp throughout the the zoom range. At F2.8 indoors low light the corners and edges perfect. Outdoors it preforms perfectly. Definitely one of the best lenses I have ever used. I only regret that it wasn’t available sooner. If anyone is considering this lens don’t be afraid to pull the trigger. It is well worth the money. Another advantage of buying from local brick and mortar stores.

I know that equipment is chosen for reliability and value.
Your statement is indicative of Nikon living on the past fooling the public and others.
Yes it is a good product but lenses and bodies for the past 30 years have definitely been sub par.
Look at all the fumbling around changing lens mounts and operations almost every year making past items completely obsolete with new cameras. Yes you can physically place the lens on the new camera but that is it. (PS Canon kept the same exact mount during the SLR period until the EF mount was introduced in spite of idiots claiming otherwise).

You are pathetic. You make a statement that I am wrong and go on to make false statements regarding NIKON. I feel like I’m listening to CNN or MSNBC. Your real name must be Don Lemon or Chris Wallace. Please don’t have a meltdown.

Why would a company acquire a less than stellar and completely dependable piece of equipment?
Remember they ALL used Nikon until the exceptional EOS system came along with exceptional ruggedness, dependability and SPEED came along.
At that point Canon ascended with firms wanting the competitive edge and superior quality and dependability and only Canon provided this.
Again only hobbyists who have disliked Canon have stuck with Nikon even knowing it was a lesser product especially when they knew AF was as slow as molasses in the winter.
It was a major investment for firms to switch to Canon so they must have known something you might be missing perhaps.

Why? It is called promotion and marketing. Canon makes their pitch and promises the moon and free equipment all to have those tacky white lenses in prime time. Yes Canon can produce a good image. Good enough for the average reader. If you want to wear a plaid sport coat to a black tie event that is your choice. I will stick with Nikon and put my D5 against anything they have.

I guess Nat Geo, Journalists and sports photographers who about 90% use Canon don't need rugged cameras.
Actually Nikons are mostly purchased by hobbyists with money and take safe guided tours with NO danger or risk except tripping over someone's oxygen tank.

That is because they typically don't pay for their equipment. It is all owned by the company that employs them. No need to get snarky regarding the age of Nikon users.

Hello all! I'm new to the forum and have searched previous posts but not found any recent on the above topics. Now that Nikon is moving a bit on the price of the D850, I'm back to asking the 'upgrade' question. I'm 99% sure I don't want to go mirrorless, but is it worth the jump to the D850? I'm no pro, but I don't use auto; I shoot RAW and do post in LR. Most of my photography is family/friends, dogs & horses and lots of lacrosse games. I never charge for pics (and try not to shoot at events where a pro is booked!), but they are used by many in announcements, holiday cards, gifts and social media. The upgrade would 'just' be for me - to get better and perhaps eventually make something of it...

Second question is another that I haven't found any recent posts on. My main lens is the newer Nikkor 70-200mm 2.8. It was a huge leap from the 70-300mm and has given me a much better appreciation for the better glass. I'm venturing into some portrait-ish work, and would like a prime to round-out my equipment. A 105mm seems to be the best fit. Most of the reviews I have found favor the Sigma, but it weighs more than the 70-200.

Thoughts?

There is no better combo for portrait work than the 850 paired with the Nikon 105 1.4. You will never shoot a portrait with any thing else once you have used this combo.

Everyone who has invested in the dinosaurs Canon and Nikon just wait. Although some of you already know some of your lenses will not work well on the new mirror-less bodies even with the adaptors. These companies will no longer be making new lenses for the DSLR's Canon users who are old enough will remember what Canon did to their loyal users of the FD system. It's coming, you'll see it is cheaper to make mirror-less bodies and current DSLR's will disappear. I still have my large collection of FD lenses and still use them but not on Canon I now use Sony. Will never buy Canon.

Didn't Nikon release a new 500 MM F5.6 for the full frame bodies around the same time as the Z7? Hmmm! Kind of blows your theory.

Speed, Comfort and High Image Quality

27 March 2019
Canon UK Press Release

Canon Inc. today announces that the company’s interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and mirrorless cameras) have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 16 consecutive years from 2003 to 2018.

Canon develops the key imaging system components featured in its EOS series of interchangeable-lens cameras – CMOS image sensors, image processors and interchangeable lenses – under the core concept of ‘Speed, Comfort and High Image Quality’. Incorporating a wide-ranging product lineup – from high-performance flagship models that are highly trusted by professionals to entry-level models that allow users to enjoy high image quality shooting with easy operation – Canon continues to support the diverse needs of customers.

In 2003, the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS 300D. This groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, captured the top share of the global market and set the stage for growth in the digital SLR market. Since that time, Canon has continued to launch a range of groundbreaking products, including the professional-model EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording.

In March 2018, Canon launched products such as the EOS M50 mirrorless camera and EOS 2000D DSLR, which allow entry-level users to effortlessly enjoy capturing professional-looking images. In striving to further expand its line-up, Canon has once again secured the leading share of the global market in 2018.

In September 2018, in pursuit of further expanding the boundaries of image capture and new possibilities in visual expression, Canon launched the EOS R mirrorless camera, equipped with a full-frame sensor, as part of the EOS R System, a new imaging system with lenses at its core. What’s more, in February 2019 Canon launched the EOS RP – a small, light and practical full-frame mirrorless camera with impressive image quality – and announced six new RF lenses, currently under development, as part of its plan to expand the EOS R System.

Canon will continue to refine its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technology to expand and create an even stronger EOS System that offers new avenues of image capture to meet the needs of increasingly diverse users and to promote the ever-growing photo and video culture.
