Proves nothing. Just take a look at my avatar. That is one of the images that I worked on. Callaway still uses it.

You have no idea who I am and what I have done. I think I'd rather keep it that way. This place is becoming pathetic. Almost as bad as the click bait clowns. No wonder most of the really talented people have left here.

I wouldn't waste my time on Tony Northrup. He's basically a Click Bait Clown with no real understanding of photography or optical physics. Steve Perry has a new book on Nikon Mirrorless Autofocus that, based on his Nikon DSLR autofocus book, should be quite good. Unfortunately, Nikon hasn't come out with a Mirrorless camera that tempts me yet so I haven't bought Steve's new book.

One of the keys to great photographs is testing, testing, testing. Sure testing your lenses and camera bodies for focus issues takes a little time but after you go thru the process it's done for as long as you own them. Once completed it removes the camera body and lens from the list of possibile causes of images that are out of focus and places them squarely on the shoulders of the photographer.

The good thing the camera body only recommends a correction number. You can repeat the test of each lens several times, average them, and use that number for your correction factor. You can also turn off the correction off at any time if you think that it is hurting your images.

I don't understand why people here seem to be so against focus fine tuning. You can print a focus chart that you find for free on the net and tack it up on any flat surface. The process only costs you some time. Nikon has automated the feature on most of its new cameras so I'm sure that the other major players have done the same. Go ahead and give it a try. It will probably help you as a photographer.

Who says the 80-400 isn't a real sharp lens. Great shots.

Tethering is connecting your camera to your computer. It allows you to view what you would see thru your viewfinder on your computer screen before you take the picture. You can check to make sure the slide or negative is straight in the holder and the holder is straight on the lens. You can also see if you have a clean image to work with and you have complete control of your camera from your PC. You actually can release the shutter from your PC. I do use a tripod when copying slides and negatives.

The software that you load on you PC to do this is either DigiCamContol or CaptureOne. PhotoShop doesn't have tethering functionality and Lightroom's tethering doesn't really work very well. Hope this helps.

Thank you all for the replies. I am now ready to order ES-2 and 60mm lens.
Thanks again.

I use an ES-2 with a 60mm f2.8 D lens. Works great. You might want to get the G version if you think you might want to go to the Nikon Z series bodies in the future. The D version won't auto focus with the Z series bodies.

You might also want to shoot tethered to do copy work. DigiCamControl works fine and it is free. You can buy a 10 foot cable from Amazon. If you are looking for editing software, CaptureOne also has tethering and they have a Nikon only version that is reasonably priced.

The last time to OP wandered in here he posted about a Canon SX40. That was in 2018. Hasn't been back 'till now. This place and the whole internet thing can be rather intimidating to some people. Let's keep tossing out suggestions and see if we can help.

Out of curiosity, what were the correction numbers that you came up with? Also have you shot with those numbers and do you see an improvement?

Thanks,

Thanks.....

Don't you lose sharpness when using an extender?

Not really noticeable with the TC 1.4 III. I use it on both the 70-200 and the 80-400. Again, I have never shot with the TC 1.7 and the TC 2.0 so I don't know much about them.

I can't decide on which lens I want to get........

The Nikon 80mm-400mm or the Nikon 200mm-500mm the lens will be used on the Nikon D850 and D750.
Used for Wild life and birds.

Like to hear from owners but

Any suggestions appreciated

I own an 80-400 and really like it. Even works well with a tc 1.4 III on my D850. Never shot with a 200-500 so I can't compare them. One thing I do with all of my lenses is adjust the fine focus. I did that with the 80-400 at 400 and at about 100 ft. The adjustment was less than a -5 if I remember correctly with and without the tc.

Capture One is a great app. Nikon has teamed up with them and there are now dedicated Nikon versions. I don't know if the free version has tethering though but they offer a 30 day free full feature evaluation. Tons of instructional webinars on You Tube. Another one that is free is digiCamControl. Good open source app. If it works for you send them a few bucks.

I have A Nikon D7000 DX camera. I am interested in upgrading to a new camera. I shoot mostly landscapes and some macro. I also dabble in wildlife photography and portrait photography. I shoot for pleasure and do not care about making money. What would be some suggestions for my next camera. I want to stay with Nikon. Thanks.

Hi -
I think it might be the right time for a new camera body but I would need more information before I make any suggestions. What do you like about your D7000? What don't you like? What do you wish it did but it doesn't. What new Nikon camera bodies have caught your eye? Why?

What lenses do you own? Again, what do you like about them? What don't you like? What do you wish they did but they don't. Which ones are you thinking about keeping short term and which ones long term? What new lenses have caught your eye? Why?

As you go through this little exercise please keep in mind that Nikon has indicated in their plan of intent, that they are going to be slowing down on the development and manufacturing of DX bodies and lenses and moving those resources to the the development and manufacturing of the new Z mount lenses. Some of the DX camera body lines will remain, at least for a while, some will disappear in the near future. New versions of the Z6 and Z7 will be introduced in the near future.

Please get back to us with your thoughts and then we will be better able to help you.

Good luck and stay healthy,

This is an interchangeable lens SLR camera that was introduced by Nikon in the '60s. It uses the same F mount lenses as the Nikon F. There were no pancake lenses back then. The Nikkormat FTn was a great camera and a great second body for photo journalists as well as people just getting into the Nikon system. It succeeded the Nikkormat FT.
