At my house we try to balance purchases for fun. As of today I am down a new boat and a skid loader. So I need some help.

I am a looking at mirrorless - Nikon and Sony. I have been a Nikon user for many, many years. Started out with a D90 many years ago and have worked my way to D850 and lots of glass. The smart thing (?) says Nikon mirrorless with a mount. Some techie dudes say move to Sony and get some new tech glass. I shoot basically anything that moves and when I get frustrated I shoot landscape. My first concern is shutter roll. Does the new firmware for Sony help? In my research long lens reach seems to be lagging behind. D850 and long lenses are heavy but fun. I have been fixed at the A7R4 for the birding possibilities. I shoot grandkid sports from swimming to football. Other than to catch up and some new bragging rights, what do you all see as the future of equipment - and is Nikon as a company, going to be gone soon?

It is difficult to go and hold and test new equipment these days. Plunking money down and waiting for mail delivery is easy but returning is not. Renting may be the avenue explored.

If you made the switch are you looking back?

I agree that a mirrorless with the same state of technology as a DSLR would not make for better pictures, it is the photog that controls the exposure and composition. But consider where the research and development dollars are being spent by the manufacturers. It's not in DSLR technology. As a Canon guy I haven't heard of a new 5DIV replacement, but we have seen the recent release of the R5, R6 and now a forthcoming R3. Canon is running as fast as they can releasing RF rather than EF glass.

A year ago I bought the EOS-R rather than the 5DIV even though the features were almost the same, I wanted to step into the EVF and see where the tech was headed. I've not looked back and even though they would likely be the same on the 5DIV, the pictures I get from the R are stunning. I'm a convert and will stay with the mirrorless products.

As to the comment about cell phones, the only thing being upgraded on cell phones these days are the cameras. They all still make phone calls, send texts run apps have wifi bluetooth and yes take photos. My cell phone is 3 versions behind because the only thing it hasn't got is the latest camera. When my non-replaceable battery is no longer able to be replaced by the local cell phone shop (the oxymoron), I'll upgrade. The manufacturers have a disposable product sales and growth model unlike a camera manufacturer who has a range of products for every taste.

For those that want to stay with their old tech, that's a choice to be made. When automatic transmissions came out and those stick shifts were pretty reliable I'm sure there were a number who thought that no one needs one of those fancy things to shift the car. In other words you cant buy a IBM PC-XT with DOS and the latest Photoshop isn't on a CD you can buy in Staples one time anymore...

Photography is a wonderful hobby. Most of us aren't in the darkroom developing pictures these days. Stay up to date or merely see the reflection of the good ole days in that mirror...

I have searched and have not found an answer. So, I am bringing this question to my fellow Hoggers. Every time I see a photograph of a camera body, there is no lens or body cap to prevent dust and debris falling onto the mirror, the lens contacts and the shutter mechanism. I wonder why this convention exists and if it has an impact on the inside of a camera.

A photographer buying a real camera requires the purchaser open the hood and see the engine. Imagine an auto professional buying a car without a cursory inspection under the hood. Those living in the past will only open the lens cap hood only to see themselves reflectively in the mirror while those buying today's camera would see the magic of technology ready to create wonderful images.

Just wanted to put in my 2 cents worth. Can't help with the gmail light room thing I wanted to explain our house hold. We have an antenna on the roof for broadcast TV. We have comcast/infinity for internet only with which we utilize our gmail accounts. And finally, we recently added a Roku streaming device which was a one time purchase. So far we have only subscribed to Britbox. We can watch most BBC shows whenever we want.

I do the same. Over the air I get 38 "channels" from about 12 local stations that each have 4 HD streams. Since I get the 4-5 major networks, I have everything I need. I can watch the ever wrong 10 day weather forecast every 10 minutes and the hourly panic - virus updates from the local news stations that nothing else to show. At night there are murder detective or not funny comedies on every station...

I also have Comcast's internet and 2 Roku boxes. From there I use Roku Channel, Netflix (my daughter), Hulu and my wife of course wanted Hallmark. Total each month is the cost of the internet and $10 for the two subscriptions. Beats the heck out of 200-5 channels not watched. On Youtube I watch a number of photography channels and am always learning something new. On Hulu and Roku channels I get a charge on watching the golden TV era shows from the 60s and 70s when real TV was made with original ideas.

As to your emailing photos, the pop and smpt servers are those servers that host the email service. You will find what you're looking for from google, this may help. https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7126229?hl=en

What breaks or wears out first in modern digital equipment? - Just wondering.

Batteries can readily be replaced but the existing electronics will definitively break or be worn out over time. This occurs seasonally every time the next version of gear with new features and higher resolution is released. That's when you can readily tell your significant other the existing gear is worn out or just plain broke...

Good evening... My wife and I would like to take a short trip to Vermont for a few days. Obviously while she is "shopping" I want to go and photograph the sights. I would like to ask any of you who have been to Vermont where are the places to photograph, ie landscapes, quaint towns, waterfalls. Our itinerary will be coming from Albany, NY driving across to Vermont ( Bennington) and go up to the middle of the state. We'll be in Vermont for about 3 days ( short get-away) Thank you

If you don't visit the Vermont Country Store in Weston, it may be your wife will without you!!!! https://www.vermontcountrystore.com/

But seriously, go to the Weston location. They allow you to photograph anything in the store and there are some really nice shots to take given the retro products mixed with current flair and the candy section of offerings from yesteryear is spectacular. Your wife will likely spend a few hours just wandering around the expanse of the store. Across the street, there is an old grist mill with a small man made dam with water fall that could consume the hours that your wife is spending in store across the street. The location in Rockingham has sights but I think Weston has a more rural charm. The is one of my photos from there taken 10 years ago with an older Canon 50D. My how our technology and cameras have changed in such a short time.

Truly, I live in CT and take trips to Vermont given the virtually unlimited opportunities for Photography. Also if you have time, drive up Mount Equinox. Spectacular views at the top of the mountain on a self guided drive.

Thanks, to all for the suggestions. I'll stay with UHH classified and E-Bay for now.

Good luck with Ebay. I have been trying to de-clutter and listed a number of items on Ebay in lieu of a garage sale. I had 5 sales in the past 6 months. I recently got an email from Ebay restricting the account (which I've used sporadically since 1995) unless I gave my social security and birthday so that they could collect state sales tax on the proceeds. I immediately delisted everything and moved it to Facebook Marketplace. That the states want to start collecting taxes on tag sale items and Ebay asking for my SSN was a bit too much and I can only imagine thousands are closing their Ebay accounts. Ebay has never been an Amazon and never will be. FB Marketplace is another avenue, but I'd try KEH too.

I have always been fascinated by Steam Engines and on rare occasions I have been able to take a few pictures. I know that there are several “Photo Tours” where people are able to take staged and other photos of Steam Engines and other trains. However I have never found a website which has an active list of upcoming tours. Does anyone know of a website, or Facebook site that has this information?

If you are in the Northeast, visit the Connecticut Antique Machinery Museum. http://www.ctamachinery.com/

Albeit the virus has screwed up their bi-annual power up events where they fire up steam engines of all types and last time having aout 7500 visitors from all over, I believe you can still go there for a self guided tour for a donation (I usually give $20). They not only have trains, but every type of steam engine imaginable. I go there to learn my camera and the attached pics were taken as test shots when I bought my EOS-R in 2019 all with natural light (all unprocessed except the liberty I took with the train that sits on the side of the road) just to give you a flavor of what's there (there's a ton more).

If it makes you happy that's fine. I'm the kind of guy that if I spent upwards of $4,000 on the camera I wouldn't think twice on spending $249 for the grip just to keep the system pure. Now as far as lenses go, that's a different story. I don't have to buy Canon lenses if a third party lens suits my needs better.

Not sure what "keep the system pure" means when it comes to a detachable accessory like a grip. They're all the same quality of plastic, so it truly boils down to OEM or aftermarket, just like your lens selections. There's a lot of accessories on the market to fit every need or use. Does one use Canon Speedlights or look at the whole variety of others? I use Godox as they fit the need. For me, it's not a profession. BTW, not that it matters, but if before purchase you have Canon L glass like I did, the cost of an EOS-R is 1/2 of your $4K.

Finally for those who were waiting (like me), an alternative to the Canon EOS-R Battery Grip was released by Vello. I couldn't justify the $249 Canon grip for myself, and even a used one at $189 from KEH was pricey. B&H is selling the new Vello grip for $89.00. It has all the buttons for BBF and the like that Canon has and also holds two batteries. Also there is a charging port so you don't need to remove the batteries. Now I'll order one, at $89 the price is reasonable. It'll be interesting to see if Canon reduces their price a bit, but I doubt it.

Happens to me all the time, and it really is no big deal. THe Adobe verification server just checks to confirm these are authorized installations, and having you select one and log into the Creative Cloud is how it's done.

I have 3 LR & PS installs, and switch among them all the time.

That it says they are already running means it is not trying to verify it unless the message is misleading. Simply they have a bug when closing the program that it is not shutting down background processes. Its a bug and no sugar coating will change that. Adobe is famous for that like all vendors are and the cloud version is good for them as they'll quietly fix things like this and never acknowledge the issue to begin with. One day you won't notice but it will just stop happening.

Just wondering how many use a Lens Coat? Seems there are not many companies that make them.
Pros, protects from dings, camouflage for wildlife, protect hands from cold. What are the cons and or more reasons to spend around $100 for one!
I see there are now skins, that are basically just stickers...

I use a padded Lowepro backpack when carrying my long lens, and only put the lens coat on the lens and camera when it's raining. Other than that with careful care, I've never been able to screw up the lens or the paint. But then again I paid good $$ for them and they're not in a commercial application where they get heavy and abusive treatment. Albeit the camo is a cool marketing thing, to me that's all there is to it. Don't think you're fooling any wildlife with a sense of smell 10K better than a human unless you're drenching yourself in Doe urine or something...

Seems to me to be a miss in the software. I can foresee no reason to keep the system "live" while the camera is turned off. Not sure if sensor is just freely moving about or otherwise moving under power? Does the menu fix push a lock pin in or something? If moving under power, it must be that the system is drawing power from the battery ever so slightly while it's sitting in the dry box or closet. I have to believe that Canon could change this in a firmware update.

Thank you. And yes, they do (one for each channel). I’ll share the schematic if you ever want to build one., but the power supply is a bear - the HV supply weighs at least 45-50 lbs.

Questions. Is there another chassis for the PS? Does the ps use solid state rectifiers or is it tubed akin to using a 35W4? The iron and caps must be huge.
