EOS-R Battery Grip

Finally for those who were waiting (like me), an alternative to the Canon EOS-R Battery Grip was released by Vello. I couldn't justify the $249 Canon grip for myself, and even a used one at $189 from KEH was pricey. B&H is selling the new Vello grip for $89.00. It has all the buttons for BBF and the like that Canon has and also holds two batteries. Also there is a charging port so you don't need to remove the batteries. Now I'll order one, at $89 the price is reasonable. It'll be interesting to see if Canon reduces their price a bit, but I doubt it.

If it makes you happy that's fine. I'm the kind of guy that if I spent upwards of $4,000 on the camera I wouldn't think twice on spending $249 for the grip just to keep the system pure. Now as far as lenses go, that's a different story. I don't have to buy Canon lenses if a third party lens suits my needs better.

Lens, grip, battery, flash, filters, ...

"Pure" is relative and a state of mind.
Why are lenses a different story?
Seems like one would purchase <brand> lenses to keep the "system" pure.

Not sure what "keep the system pure" means when it comes to a detachable accessory like a grip. They're all the same quality of plastic, so it truly boils down to OEM or aftermarket, just like your lens selections. There's a lot of accessories on the market to fit every need or use. Does one use Canon Speedlights or look at the whole variety of others? I use Godox as they fit the need. For me, it's not a profession. BTW, not that it matters, but if before purchase you have Canon L glass like I did, the cost of an EOS-R is 1/2 of your $4K.

I had a Vello grip for my 5D MkIII and it died after using it for just a few months. Never again. All the other grips were OEM and never failed.

Interesting, have had my Vello for over five years. Works like a champ.
I must be lucky.

When I photographed collegiate sports several photographers complained about off-brand grips and ended up buying the camera manufacturers grip. I had a Vello remote trigger that worked about six times before it quit working. I spend a lot of money on the Canon cameras that I have so I stay with all canon gear. The only non-canon lenses I use are the old Hasselblad lenses that I have an adaptor for.

I didn’t say there was logic to my preferences so no need for me to justify. Actually when I said $4,000 I was thinking of the R5. However your DSLR glass will not render as well as the R glass.

I couldn't agree more. I guess plastic lenses are in order.
