Jim, thank you so much for the time you put into this. I learned a few new things! Can you describe the steps for creating the png? Now that I have a better idea of what is actually happening, I found a You-Tube video that uses graphics and clipping masks: https://youtu.be/qg1vmQqVVOc

Did you use a pre-set graphic or "paint" your own?

Now, to your tutorial:

- I had never used "File - Place" so that saved a few steps right there (I would normally open another file, then drag from Photo Bin).

- I have used the PS Elements "Pattern" stamp once, so was pleased to revisit. It works a bit differently from your instructions, I think. I had to use a brush to apply your pattern texture over the whole image. But maybe I'm just mis-understanding.

- The color code you provided, f6bf70, seemed orange on my editing computer (see screenprint), is pinker here. Not the UHH "mustard yellow effect" again?

- I happened to use a photo with all blue sky and a simple central subject, so it wasn't until I chose a different pic (Mt Hood, #4 below) that I discovered how your png really works - duh!! A good one for Rongnongno's "pure stupidity" thread

Again, thank you so much for your time in putting this together. You and other PP Forum participants bring great value to the section!

Calla, thanks for your compliment and for your information with link. Gonna check that out!

Richard, thanks so much for these examples. I figured I ought to be able to make a brush for rain. First few attempts didn't work out, but may try again today

I'm interested in learning more about PS brushes, when to use them, ideas for using them, etc. I use PS and work with layers but I'm not very familiar with brushes except for using them for painting in/out masks. Thanks for any input or direction.

I've found that CreativeLive has great classes....you might take a look at their courses. Also, Matt Kloskowski does some great classes and if you check You Tube, he has many free classes, as do many other photographer mentors. Matt just did one on on brushes that is free and came to me via my email...you can try this:

https://mattk.com/how-to-get-the-most-from-adobe-2-free-custom-brushes/?utm_source=Matt+K+Subscriber+List&utm_campaign=60687a5f55-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_05_17_01_33_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_3ac5889bd7-60687a5f55-441374237&mc_cid=60687a5f55&mc_eid=a807cc4917

You'll get a feel for his style and if you like it. ALSO....he instructs you how to download many more brushes to your PhotoShop acct (if you have PS subscription).

Hope this helps...

A couple of years ago I downloaded a bunch of free bird brushes from https://www.brusheezy.com/

So far I've only been using them like a "stamp" as silhouettes. Instructions on how to make your own are in this topic. There are a few examples in the 3-page thread. Bare-limb trees make a great stamp for composites, especially when texturized

#1 below is a simple creation, typical of what I do. The dragonflies and bits of trees are home-made, as are the smaller birds. I place each element on a separate layer for easy re-size, moving, flipping orientation and distorting shape.

Obviously, there are much more sophisticated applications (especially in the realm of painting), and I'm looking forward to seeing what ideas people share here. Thanks for the topic, Connie!

I still occasionally have a problem with images going to the wrong place and I am diligent to double check so there is something about the process that is a little tricky.

My process is to import to a folder and rename using my computer. I have a great Mac program called "Name Mangler" it provides a lot of options for renaming, it is intuitive, and it is really FAST. Blink and you miss it. Then I import into the LR catalog for rating, cutting, selecting and sharing.

I've used LR to catalog and edit all my photos for the last 3+ yrs...also have attempted, little by little, to add my older photo, but still have tons that I still haven't added. Interested in the program you mentioned, Name Mangler, and how and why it might be used.

thx

Thank you - I'm gearing up for a fall color/nature shoot with one of my son in laws - stay tuned for some CA mountain shots.

I'll be anxious to see your "CA mountain shots" and locations where you shoot....love the fall colors and I'm actually in N. Calif.

We did a fall trip about 4 yrs ago to the east coast....Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine....it was wonderful!! Would love to do it again!

I have used Canon for 40+ years. My current camera is the EOS 1DS Mark III. I bought this new and love the camera. I shoot mostly landscapes. My photography today is changing and I need more dynamic range. The Canons maximum ISO is 3200 and there is a lot of noise to deal with. The Sony I have selected is the new Alpha 7R IV. I purchased two lenses, Both G master lenses. The Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS and the Sony SEL24-70mm GM. I expect the camera around Oct 15. Can someone tell me; am I going to be happy with the Sony? This has left a big hole in the coffers, so to those that use the earlier models of the Alpha 7R series, is there something you couldn't live without for your Sony camera?
PS... I am also looking at the Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM Wide-angle Zoom. Is this a good choice or is there something else I overlooked.
I respect everyone's opinion here. Canon users, please don't lambast me and tell me I have made a big mistake. The deed is done, I'm switching to Sony.

Great choice in my opinion! You're going to love Sony! I've had several Canon's over the years....back to the film days. Also had a Nikon. Since I've retired 4 yrs ago, I've been able to spend more time taking photos and I'm obsessed! I switched to Sony a7ii over 3 yrs ago and really liked it. I 'upgraded' to the Sony a7Riii this past Feb. and so happy I did. It was a stretch for me $$ wise, but really love this camera! The battery life is really very good in my a7riii, big battery life improvement over my a7ii. Wish I hadn't bought the 'kit lens' originally with my a7ii, but have since bought the 24-70 GM which is on my camera most of the time. Also have the 50mm 1.4, the 90mm 2.8 macro.

I found it took awhile for me to get used to the Sony menu system....not as intuitive as other brands, but you'll get used to it.

Anyway, bottom line....I think you will love your new Sony and will have no regrets!! ENJOY!

8x12 will print the full image, no missing parts 8x12 is readily available at places like Costco, Walgreen's etc.

Read this topic for future and/or if you must print 8x10 (using your own printer?):

I still must be doing something wrong....even when I try to align it to print an 8x12 size, it is too close to edges and will cut a small amount of photo on both sides. :-(

I’ve been trying to read all the links everyone has sent, but I’m brain dead at this point! May have to give it s rest till tomorrow.

What you are talking about is changing the proportions of a photo, not resizing in the general sense. Without extreme and usually distorting measures, you will need to crop parts of the image or print in original 2 X 3, 6 X 9, etc. Been there, done that!

So, in other words, print 6x9 vs 8x10? :-(

You must re-size using some sort of post-processing program. Usually there is one that comes with your camera or, is available to download, free, online. There are also free Windows programs that will do the same thing. I'm not an Apple user but I suspect they have the same programs. You could post the picture on UHH and some nice person would probably re-size it for you in a jiffy.

Thanks for your reply...I have LR and ON1 and have been trying to resize in both of these, but with no success. I would like to learn how to do it, as I've had the problem before and undoubtedly will have to attempt it again in the future.

Ok....officially going crazy!!! I’ve been trying this last night & all day today with no luck!
I’m trying to resize a photo to print an 8x10. Shot with full frame camera, aspect ratio is 3:2. If I try to print 8x10 it crops photo so I’m losing body parts :-(
Thank you in advance for any direction, suggestions.
