I currently have a mid 2014 Macbook Pro. At weekends I attend mountain bike events and upload my images when driving home after the event. Recently the macbook pro has been running out of application memory when I upload about 4000 images through Capture One. So I have to stop driving restart the laptop which then has to go through all the duplicates before it can start uploading new images. I think it is time for a new M1 macbook. I know from reviews that the Air is similar to a low end Pro, and has no fan and only 2 thunderbolt 4 ports, where the Pro has a fan and 3 ports. If I buy an Air I will also need to buy a hub or dock to get more ports for my peripherals, card reader, SSD storage and monogram device I use for fast culling when not driving eg staying in a B&B. I also have Lightroom and may switch to that instead of capture one.

Does anyone have real experience of using the M1 air and/or Pro uploading 4000 images and can offer any advice? Please don't respond with other laptop suggestions, I live in the apple universe.

I have no experience w/the Air. Bought the smaller version of the MacBook Pro around the holidays. It is just the right size to carry around, fit on my lap. My baby. Graphics + speed are great. Yes, it was pricy but my previous MacBook Pro lasted forever. Really happy I decided on the smaller (14”?), (not the 16”). Love it. Great for zoom mtgs., has a nice heft, speedy fast, lots of memory. You can’t go wrong.

Recommendations for bag large enough for body with lens attached plus two more lenses? TIA.

Highly recommend this bag. Like a tank but the best part is, when all packed and closed down, it has zipper access across the top that allows you access to contents without lifting the flap back. Will accommodate everything you itemized while also accommodating a laptop + iPad.

It has sectioned, padded, lens compartments that also slip out so you can get your camera/lens combo in there, but also other things for travel: meds, jewelry, purse. Not too heavy, but offers much protection and versatility. Another bonus: if you have a roller, carry-on suitcase with the handle extended, it has a secure, horizontal, velcroed strap across the back that will slide down the suitcase handle and securely ride on your suitcase. Also, very comfortable shoulder strap. Very versatile, safe + sturdy. I receive many compliments when traveling. Fits right under your plane seat. I also use it to store my five lenses + Nikon D610. I love good design. Worth the $. I’ve had mine for years, looks brand new. Get the blue version.

Good luck, Eileen

Could you tell us the size of 1 of your RAW files? or at least what camera they are being made with? 1 TB may be enough.

Sure. I’m using the Nikon D610. My goal is to corral all the photos (desktop, etc.) into one place.

Can anyone estimate the amount? I have about 12K raw images. Will they all fit?

Is there a way to insure my camera equipment so I can put into my luggage instead of carrying it with me as a carry on?
We travel with our dog and I carry my valuables in a carry on bag so i usually have my hands full. My camera gear takes up to much space but I am afraid it will not make it in my luggage. so a lot of times I leave my Nikon D7200 and just take use my iphone. Any suggestions?

I insure my camera equipment (about $3,500 worth) through my homeowner’s (NYCM) for about $44/year. No deductible, full replacement cost.

I try to copy to Seagate but says no folder...I do not know how to make a folder on seagate

I believe you first have to format the drive.

It cannot be formatted if there are items on the drive. They have to be temporarily removed.

There are a lot of sites with lots of good info. I'll put some at the end of this post.

Just remember to format the Seagate drive for the Mac operating system. I use MacOS Extended Journaled as my file system.

We need some additional information. Did you just copy the pictures from a memory card? Are they already in your iCloud storage? Are they in Photos? Did you copy upload them from another program? Where they are and how they got on your computer are important.

As long as you take your time and think through the steps before you take them, you should be fine.

What you want to do isn't hard. Here are some websites that you can refer to later.

Also, before you can format Seagate for your photos, you have to remove everything you may have on Seagate to a zip drive, then format, then you can add back contents from your zip drive. ~ Eileen

What are some "Must See" stops for an August 2022 photography trip to Newfoundland?
Thank you!

Two things: if you are a photographer AND a foodie, do not miss a stop at Merchant Tavern (chef owned) in St. John’s. One of Anthony Bordain’s stops in 2018.

Second, if you want the inside scoop, join usservas.org, a travel organization promoting peace and cultural understanding. After joining, you will have access to list of locals in Newfoundland. They host up to two overnights in their home and you can also find a day host who can advise or meet you and show you all the secret places. All this can be set up by e-mail in advance.

US Servas: the most awesome, almost-free travel organization with hosts throughout our world!

I hope you have amazing photo opportunities. Don’t forget the locals, they know best.
