Planning a week-long trip with wife later this year to San Diego. I've been there on business and few times and am aware of and plan to visit:
San Diego Zoo (probebly go two different days since it's so BIG)
Balboa Park
San Diego Auto Museum
Midway museum
Sunset Cliffs State Park.
Any other things to do or places to see that fellow UHHers would suggest? (yes, I can and will do Google searches, but interested in what others here suggest).
HI Basil, so I live in San Diego, so here are just a few suggestions which some of you may have already on your list. OK, definitely the zoo, it really is world class but very time consuming. SeaWorld is wonderful if you are interested in that kind of thing. Balboa park, has multiple museums as well as beautiful gardens. Again time consuming, but worth it, beware venturing "outside" the museum area into the park itself. It's really pretty, but has become a haven for homeless encampments and could possibly put you in a situation where you don't want to be. So to continue, Little Italy is basically a main street with some great authentic places to eat, as well as cool arts and crafts to see and shoot. Close to there is the "gaslamp quarter" with interesting stores, and it leads down to the Padres baseball stadium, and the convention center, (where comicon is held). The "Embarcadero" is definitely a must see! (Don't Miss It)! For photography, it's a great spot. There's historic ships, mored up, as well as a submarine, and usually "super yachts". You can wander down the seafront to the aircraft carrier "Midway", which is now a museum and worth every penny, (book online, in advance), cheaper and you'll skip the line! A little further along, towards the big hotels is "Seaport Village", well worth visiting, with lots of places to eat, a vintage carousel, usually some live music and lots of arts and crafts, and the fishing boats offload down there and sell their catch right from the boats, and usually you'll also see some military ships passing by. (lots of photo ops). Two "upscale" areas are Coronado Island, (the Hotel Del is there), several movies used it, and celebs seem to like it, and the island is home to the wealthier families, lots of homes with private docks for their yachts! The North of the island is home to the naval base where all the war ships live. Another part of San Diego is "La Jolla", similar to Coronado in as much that it's an affluent area, not very big, but it's a pretty area, beautiful seafront, (one of the best in San Diego), you can kayak around the bay and into the caves! There's an aquarium, and there's also some very nice stores and galleries there, (don't know if you've heard of the world renowned fine art photographer Peter Lik)? But his gallery is there!
Anyway I've gone on for too long already, and it would probably take a month to take in all I've already mentioned. There's a lot more here, but I hope I've got you started, and helped with some ideas. Have a great trip, and don't forget batteries and memory cards! All the best,
Ray.
