I Am looking for recommendations for a good editing program. I am a newbie and currently use a free primitive program. I am looking for a good fairly priced program. I also need a new computer that can adequately handle the program. Processer specs etc would really be helpful. Thanks in advance for responding.

For image processing I use Paint Shop and Faststone. Stay away from Crapple, Mac is overhyped and overpriced. Look at Dell or HP desktops, at least 16 Gig of RAM and one T internal memory. Add two seperate external drives of one T or more for backup image storage.

I realize this is probably a stupid question but I have googled and can’t get a good answer...

If it was suggested to me to buy a 24-105 lens for my canon but they’re $800+, why does an 18-135 not cover the same thing? Priced at only $300?

What sensor size are you shooting? 24-105 is a full frame lens, 18-135 is for APS-c.

Last weekend I saw a 5k mud/obstacle race and took my camera just to be doing something, I was at the finish line catching runners cross when the director of the event came up and gave me her card and ask for the photos, seemed real upset with her Photographer, said he was suppose to be covering that area but he was off playing with his drone.

That night I sent her the pics and she seemed to really like them and ask if I was available to cover a Gala there doing. Now for the question, it’s a late evening, indoor event and the location has dim lighting for these events. I only have a 24-105 f/4 lens and a 70-200 f/2.8. I think the 70-200 will be to long and I don’t think my 24-105 would be good with the lighting with it being an f/4. I’m considering renting or just going ahead and purchasing a 24-70 f/2.8. Flash and setting up lights isn’t an option here. Do y’all agree or do y’all think my 24-105 would handle it?

I usually do all my work outdoors and with natural light but I don’t want my equipment to limit me. I’m shooting with a Canon 5D mark iv. I have done indoor, lowlight work with my 70-200 and was happy with the results but never worked with the 24-105 in these conditions.

Just get a 35mm f2 and a decent flash and extension sync cord, a stroboframe bracket to elevate the flash and you're good to go. Use the 35mm lens only and zoom with your feet.

I have decided to give my Nikon D3500 a super wide angle lens for my soon-coming 89th birthday. I checked around & was startled to see how many choices there are. The 6 choices that most caught my eye are as follows:

a) Nikon AF-P DX 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G
b) Nikon AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G
c) Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD
d) Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM AF
e) Tokina AT-X PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8
f) Tokina AT-X 11-20mm f/2.8 PRO DX

I'm a novice -- strictly a hobbyist. I mostly shoot candids at family times, and landscapes when I amble around on my own. The best of the candids will get stuck in a family album (I'm old-fashioned that way) & the landscapes will probably languish on my computer.

So... which of these 6 should I buy? (I presently lean toward (f) because of the 2.8 or (d) because of the wide 8mm end, but I am clueless about other selection factors.)

Your comments & suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

When I used DX gear (D90), I bought a Tokina 11-16 f2.8 and was quite happy with it shooting the built environment. I gave the camera and lens to my son when he became a Fire Investigator for his department.

I was taking pictures of ships today & had taken quite a few when inexplicably everything got a strong pink tinge. This showed up in the LCD as well as the pictures. It was like a pink filter had been activated. I went through the menus 3 times without seeing anything that looked awry to me. I turned the camera on and off 3 times. I even took the battery out to no avail. Finally, I did a default shooting reset from the menu and it went back to normal. I suspect it was either an accidental filter activation or I somehow altered the temperature setting?

Two questions. What did I probably inadvertently activate and how? Second, if it happens again is simply restoring default shooting the easiest way to correct it or there a better solution?

As an old curmudgeon from the film era, I much prefer using the viewfinder when shooting. I only use the LCD screen to adjust menu items or shoot video. I have my LCD screens turned off except to set a menu item or review images, it keeps my nose from resetting things and saves battery life.

I don’t have a macro lens but would like to take some macro shots. What do those on here that do not have a macro lens use?

I have looked at filters, bellows and auto extension tubes.

I would love some input on this

Thanks

Chuck

Nowadays my macro work is all copy work. I use a set of close-up lenses or a PK-13 extension tube on a 50mm f1.8 on a D600 FX body.

My B&Ws will likely be around that long and are still OK. I took special care in processing them to make sure all the chemicals were gone/neutralised.

Thanks for the caution... hope others can learn from this discussion.

Yes, conventional BW negs, metallic silver images, will last. Color negatives are organic dyes and will fade and degrade as they age, same as any E-6 process slides. As for digital archives, I understand the procedure is a continous migration to newer multiple media while maintaining the software to access and read your images.

This is as old as the existence of eye-level viewfinders.

Should the eye that is NOT at the viewfinder be kept open, or closed?

I have read that the unused eye should be kept open (forgetting the reason), and it seems my mind over many years has trained itself to ignore what the unused open eye is seeing. Fine.

But now that I find myself having to change which eye I view through (vision problem), I'm wondering if I should just close the now-unused eye, or go through a long process of training my mind to ignore the now-unused eye.

What do YOU do?

Well I'm right eye dominant and my left eye has a blind spot in the center. I close my left eye when shooting a DSLR, rifles and pistols. Funny, using shotguns, my left eye is open.

Good morning everyone,
I was recently given this camera, and have been pursuing info mainly on the lens thus far.
Most of what i have learned come through early catalogs between 1911- 1916.

What i can read off of the lens itself:
Goerz syntor series 1, focus 8 1/4inch, f6.8, no. 228943, us patent no. 635472

Serial number on side of lens, no.137430

On the side of the box i found,
Patented Nov. 1906

Does anyone have exerience or knowledge of these types of cameras?

You have what may be a 5x7 view camera. The 8 1/4 inch lens would be a normal lens for that size film. Measure the rear image size to be sure, it may be a full plate
(6 1/2 x 8 1/2) size.

While I live prox. 10 miles from them I do not shop with them.

Having worked in retail camera stores, I would see many unsophisticated people expect to get retail or higher price for their equipment. Rule of thumb was sell used gear at half retail or higher but pay no more then quarter retail .

The police always say it's not about the money, it's about safety. So, if that's true, why don't they donate all the fines they collect to charity? When someone says it's not about the money, they mean, it's all about the money.

Modern policing has been perverted by city managers and trustees into a revenue generation agency instead of a public safety agency. I worked for a small town department yet each officer was required to write two tickets per shift except truck officers where the overweight fines ran into thousands of dollars. Policing should not be a profit making operation.

I used to mount paper prints on Masonite for AIA competition. Paper can so be mounted on Foamcore. You can also have prints made on metal or glass.

What???!!
The state or city governments make money on traffic infractions not the police departments. The fine is paid to those city or state government agencies. Not the police departments.

Exactly. In Chicago parking enforcement and collection of fines is no longer done by the Police department but by the City Dept. Of Revenue !
