Though I prefer BandH for my camera needs, a friend asked me to check out the following camera dealers. What better place then here? Has anyone had any experience or knowledge of these stores: Ace Photo, Ashburn, VA, McClanahan Photo, Warrenton, VA, or Tri State Camera, Brooklyn, NY? Thanks for any help you can give.

Tri State is a scam. Don't know about the others.

Thanks, Gene51. From what my friend said I suspected the offer was too good to be true.

I've been to Ace Photo in Ashburn, VA about five or six times. I live about 65 miles south of there near Fredericksburg. The amount of inventory they have is incredible. I've been there and discovered items for photography that I didn't even know existed. They have a warehouse area in the back. They have to get up on ladders to reach everything. Go there if you can. Be prepared to spend a few hours in there because they have so much. You might have to go on lunch break and come back.

If you're in the northern Virginia or Washington D.C. area also check out the District Camera stores. They have three locations now. I've been to their Burke, VA location.

Why not support local , with Nikon,Canon and everyone else setting the price ,there is no $$ advantage .
Nothing beats holding it in your hands ,seeing how it feels, and supporting a local business

I have been to Ace in Ashburn, purchased stuff there, and attended a free class taught by a Panasonic rep from New York. As previously stated, it is a huge place. The second floor is a classroom.

Ace policy is to match the B&H Photo and the Adorama prices.

Ace's. sister store, Dominion Camera is located in Fairfax, Va. Dominion is not as big as Ace, and their service is not as good as Ace.

It will take you a long time to see everything at Ace. Like the 2 big NYC mega-stores, Ace buys used equipment.

I have been to the store and didn't find them particularly helpful.
I attempted to trade eq. in for a new lens. They didn't look at my trade, instead they simply looked at the list went to a book and gave me a very low price.
They have their customers however since there is a lot of used lenses and cameras on display at very high prices. They have a lot of accessories on display.

While I live prox. 10 miles from them I do not shop with them.

These experiences were over a year ago.

Camera Casino in Oshkosh, WI has always been fair and extremely helpful. They never rush for a sale or push you out of the store. I prefer local over internet sales. If I have questions or issues they are right here.

If your friend can get to Brooklyn, going a little farther to Long Island would be worth a trip to Cameta Camera.

"Tri State is a scam. Don't know about the others."

I second that. Go with someone reputable like B&H, Adorama, Hunts, Cameta, Robert's Camera just to mention a few.

Don't know where you live but Roberts Camera in Indianapolis is excellent, both new and used.
