I can see that circular filters aren't the only things "polarizing" around here.

How many frames would it take to record light traveling one inch?

Both are nice lens, buy what you can afford until you can afford the better lens. Rent if you don't need it often. Unless you are making LARGE prints, you may not be able to see the difference. Good luck on your decision.

I booked a flight to Las Vegas from Honolulu for a two week RV trip. I am taking a two cameras, and three or four lenses. It didn't say anything when I booked the flight, but the itinerary they sent (United) says no carry on bags probably due to a small plane from SFO to LAS. So I'm not sure what to do now. Cancel and pay the cancellation fee? Gate check backpack in carry on suitcase? Check a pelican case and risk theft? None of these options are ideal. It is a once in a lifetime kind of trip, with stops at national parks, etc., including the elk rut at Rocky Mountain NP, so it is essential I take my gear (photography is one of the prime reasons for the trip). I can take a personal item (I have a messenger bag that holds a camera and two small lenses), but the telephotos needed for wildlife won't fit.

Any advice?

Number One - I don't fly United. Poor experiences in the past with that carrier.
Number Two - Watch a couple of light hearted YouTube videos about the experiences of a Canadian Band that flew United Airlines. Google: united breaks guitars

A few years ago, I compared the 50/1.4 AF-S and the 50/1.4 AF-D. Image quality was the same, but the AF-D lens focused faster. I'm aware that you asked about the f/1.8 version, but this will give you something else to look at. Good luck on your decision.

What do you want to photograph with these lens? Low light street photography, the 50mm f/1.8 would be the lens. Portraits and macro, the 60mm f/2.8 would be my choice for a crop sensor camera.

No matter the brand, never buy "Grey Market" unless the equipment is disposable. The US importer won't fix it and won't sell parts to fix it, but you can return it to Japan. Don't hold your breath on that one! The chance of you ever seeing your equipment again are slim and none.

I have already spoken to Kolari Vision about converting mine to 720nm Infrared. As soon as it comes in, I will charge the battery, shoot a few test shots and send it in for the conversion.

His choice of cameras is his business. He didn't indicate why he was selling both cameras, just that he wanted the XT3. He actually bought two of them with the grip. Showed me photos that truly were impressive!

Not really. After he shot a few photos with the XT3, he was real happy about the deal. So much better then the previous two cameras! The detail recorded, the touch screen AF and the fact that the screen doesn't black out when shooting in continuous mode, he is very happy.

Find a store that takes trades. I have a friend that traded both his xt2 and XH1 for the new XT3.
