The more you get use to it, the more you will like Capture One.

Select the files you want to go to Smug mug, then export (File/Export) in jpeg of your chosen size and quality to a folder, and then upload to Smugmug.

Sorry, I was away since my post. So you downloaded to Luminar, and then to a folder on your computer, after which you formatted the cards. I was thinking the movie file did not get on your Camera at all, but was somehow shared with your computer or iPhone and ended up in the same file.

Did your son take movies on his or your iphone while you were there? If so, they could have been shared with your computer.

Do I recall correctly that the date and time on the movie file was similar to when you were taking the pictures? Also, I believe there is free software that can easily recover information from formatted cards. If you tried that, my bet is the movie was not on the cards, and did not get into the camera.

Lastly, let me get this straight: you started to download to Luminar, then gave up because of the slowness. I assume you did not export back from Luminar, but rather copied the files to a folder on your computer rom the card. Did you create a new file to hold the pictures?

This is intriguing.

Amazing, 6 pages and no solution. Query, where did you see the movie? You say downloaded on your computer, and later identified as a Mac. Did you download to “Photos”? Or to a file in Finder or to Elements or other software? Is the movie file also visible on the SD card?

I have some possibilities which I will refine after hearing your answers.

We must solve this mystery.

I had a good point and shoot stolen several years ago. The camera was only worth a few hundred bucks, but it left me with no pictures for that trip, which made me quite angry. I’m also guessing that it was easier for someone to pocket the small camera than it would be to steal a dslr.

I researched many a year ago, and the clear favorite (for my needs) was Capture One, which I bought despite the extra expense. I am very pleased with the results.

No need to air drop to your iPad. From your file, import to "Photos" on your Mac, either by dragging and dropping or using File then Import on the menu. Then put the right setting to sync your photos to the cloud, and they will all appear on your iPad and iPhone, sorted by date and fully searchable by location, title, and Keyword

I just upgraded my d5100 to the new d7500. Costco has a nice bundle for $1599. So far, I like it very much. Weight and feel is nice, and autofocus is accurate and instant. I personally prefer the one card slot, but if you want 2, get the 7200.

Steve Perry has a good review out comparing it to the d7200 and the d500. I just felt, like your question, that 6 years and several models difference will have improvements.

Use the Photos app already on your system. It has fabulous organizing an search capabilities and the post processing will take you a long way before you need any other software. If nothing else, use it to learn pp and then decide what features you are missing.

Download the help manual and learn it right.

Capture One makes a free Sony version that you can get for your a6000. Definitely start with that, and I bet you end up buying the Pro version (as I did) and never go to Adobe.

Just open your Aperture library in Photos. It will create a Photos library which will still open in Aperture. Try using Photos. The organization is fantastic, and it has all the basic editing tools.

If you don't like Photos, other software like Lightroom and Capture One will convert your Aperture library. Worst case, you could export all your pictures from Photos and import them to any other software.

Capture One is fabulous. On trials I could never get as good results on Lightroom.

If you think a different camera or lens would help, why not rent for a couple days and find out? I think prices are reasonable if you don't keep them long. Then you would know exactly how much improvement (or not) they might make. Keep you from an "expensive mistake". I can't believe no one else mentioned this. Just something to think about if all the aforementioned good suggestions don't get you the results you're after. Charlie

Thanks, that was going to be my next step, and I had already looked up rentals. However, I really have the problem solved with much faster shutter speeds, so I will hold off for now.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Again, thanks all for your help. Amfoto1, that is a very lengthy and thorough response, full of good thoughts. Thank you for taking the time to write it. I appreciate it.

Again, I also thank the most recent posters for their thoughts. I have a good tripod, but should be less lazy about using it and should get a gimbal head.

Thanks.

Do you mean 1/300? As photogreg said, you must first use a tripod under controlled conditions and see if there is any softness in the images. I doubt you can buy your way to sharper images.

Very good article on stabilization.

Thank you Jerry. Very eye-opening article. I think for me, who seems to have enough shake to affect longer focal lengths, fast shutter speed with no IS is the way to go. The pictures I took 2 days ago at 3000+ were very sharp, and now I'll try IS off.

Two other comments: I meant not 1/300, but 1/ effective 35 mm equivalent, which would be 1/450 on the Nikon 300 and 1/600 on the Panasonic. Second, it was the very notion that trying to "buy my way out of it" wouldn't work that lead me to experiment with the high ISO & focus and post this thread in the first place. As I said I don't mind spending the money if it solves the problem, but would feel very stupid if it didn't.

Thanks for the comments and insight. Sure has changed my understanding of VR.
