Beautiful photos. we think of this area every memorial day - - my wife's uncle was killed during the battles around the Colmar pocket and is buried in the American cemetery at Epinal.

I think "Baggers Rest Stop" would be a more appropriate title.

Went to Wal-Mart today. As usual there was a long line at the checkout register. I noticed that the guy behind me was wearing a USMC ball cap. I asked him about the places he served, length of service, etc. I was taken aback by some of his answers. Said he served in the special forces in Nam, Cambodia, Okinawa, North Korea (huh), Japan(huh), Somalia (huh) and a bucket list of other places. I noticed that he looked to be about 50. ??. I asked him what all citations he received. When he mentioned the two purple hearts and a trident I knew this was a bad case of stolen valor. Seems to me there ought to be a law against it.

I'm not saying this guy is legit, but there is a possibility that he is. I wear "Navy" shirt that my daughter (who is in the Navy) gave me. I was never in the Navy. I started off as an enlisted Marine an transferred to the Army and eventually went Special Forces. This guy could have been a SEAL in Viet Nam that that later volunteered for Delta Force (they do recruit from all services and are "Black" Special Forces). IF this were the case, what this guy replied could very well be true. If he had been a Delta Operator, he would never be specific but might make very general statements like this guy did. Delta is not like SEAL Team 6 (or whatever it's called today); When Delta is involved in something you will almost NEVER hear about them being there unless something goes terribly wrong - like Desert 1 in Iran. I was in Special Forces for over 10 years and just recently read about the missions that took out the SCUD launch sites during Desert Storm over 30 years ago - - it was done by a Delta squadron. Schwarzkopf credited them with keeping the Israelis out of the war.
The guy could have been given the Marine cap by his grandson or a nephew who is in the Marine Corps. To even try out for Delta a recruit must be in absolutely top physical condition... above what most people can even understand. It is possible that the guy who you thought was about 50 was actually well into his 60s. Some Special Forces guys drift back and forth over to the CIA.

You are probably right about the "stolen valor" business, but it is possible that you were talking to a retired Delta Operator.

Those for which this is true, planned poorly.

I've been retired for 12 years and the hours are great and the money is even greater. Our retirement income is greater than I ever made when I was working.

Someone posted this picture yesterday. Two of these flew low and loud over us. Any idea what it is? We have what used to be Stewart Air Force Base close to us. It's a regular airport now.

I do believe this is an AC-130 Spectre gunship - - - because of the bulges on either side of the fuselage.

This is the first time I have seen a tornado a little close to home if you ask me. No damage was done just a lot of wind, rain and hail. This happened on our farm in Platteville, Colorado.

These are really incredible Lorima, thank you.

He doesn't matter for what.... of course he matters to your family? But he did come back from the war and he had a life (maybe shorter than it would have been) and his family was enriched by his presence. That does not make him eligible to be counted among those killed in action who never came home to their families. It's remembering those who never came back - that Memorial Day is about.

Ok, Ok. I understand. If you all want all want to celebrate Howdy Doody's contribution to our nation's war victories, you are clearly within you rights to do so. What you clearly don't comprehend is that there is a vast difference between someone serving in the military (heroic or not) and someone who is killed in our military actions. Art Huertel was 22 when he was killed. He never saw his daughter who was born after he was deployed to North Africa. His death was extremely traumatic to his family for generations afterward. Art Huertel and his story is legion and this is what Memorial Day is about. There is a huge difference and if you morons can't understand that, I'm finished wasting my time responding to you.

I don't believe there were any American troops yet engaged in WWI on 30May17. The first American troops arrived in Europe in June of 1917.

When you do both, you detract from the true purpose of this "remembrance Day".

Apparently many poster makers, even back then, didn't understand the purpose of Memorial Day.

Thanks for the reminder. His story is perfect for Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is for us to remember those who were killed defending our nation. NOT for remembering highly decorated soldiers.

Art Heurtel (my wife's uncle) was killed defending a hill in the Colmar pocket shortly before Audie Murphy earned his MOH in the counter attack. He was awarded a posthumous Silver Star.

Remembering Art is what Memorial Day is about. Not Audie.

With all the covid vaccinations going on, has anyone been offered or gotten a flu shot? Although I have never gotten one, every year it seems I was asked at least three times if I want one.

My first covid shot is scheduled for 9:00am Wednesday. The nurse promised she would find a sharp needle.

I really think the medical profession does poorly in explaining exactly what the primary benefit of a flu shot is. It's NOT in preventing you from getting the flu. It's that the flu shot will vastly reduce the severity of the flu, it you do get it.

Do you monitor the "CALFIRE" website? https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents I think you could get the most up-to-date information there. I think they have a daily briefing too.
