Someone posted this picture yesterday. Two of these flew low and loud over us. Any idea what it is? We have what used to be Stewart Air Force Base close to us. It's a regular airport now.
Looks like a C130 Hercules.

As others have said a C-130. The Coast Guard flies them over my house quite frequently. I believe they are out doing touch and goes for training.

Jerry have you played with flightradar24 on you phone or tablet. Last week i used it after seeing an unusual plane pass over, I thought it had an unusual sound too. Within a minute I leaned it was a Nanchuck C-6 and when i researched that I leaned it has a radial engine. I could also see where it had come from and uf I cared to keep watching I could see where it went. A great app to play with. Cheers.

If not mistaken I belive the C-130 is still based at Stewart
Thanks. I can understand why it's so loud.
I put many, many miles as crew/passenger on C-130’s. Amazing capabilities and able to land/takeoff in some really rugged places. Using JATO bottles they can take off in approximately 1600 feet.

I've seen videos of the JATO take-offs. Dramatic!
An addendum: A C-130 is one of very few aircraft able to back up under its own power. We have landed in places that had no room to turn around. Backing up a short distance was the only option.

Wow! I didn't know that. I saw a C-17 back up using their thrust reversers; easy for a jet engine. How does a prop plane do that? Can they rotate the prop blades enough so they give backward thrust?
