I am curious when or if you change the SD storage card. Do you change to a new card after a period of time say a year or 2, after a specific number of shots on the card example 100,000, or do you use a card till it fails. I have never had a card fail but I am not a high volume shooter but I read that some photographers only use a card for a period of time then exchange for a new one. Just wondering what your thoughts are.

I have about 30 sd cards (not including micro cards and Compact Flash cards) that are varying sizes.. I started with 16k cards and went up as camera technology improved to 128gb cards. I have only had 2 card failures and they were the very early 16k cards. I use my small cards to save camera setups on (My Nikon Cameras will allow you to backup all of your settings to an SD card so I do this and keep one in the house and a second in my camera bag). My D7100 has two 128 gb cards in it and I carry 4 extras... my wife's D7000 has two 64 gb cards in hers with two backups. These cards are two years old and have yet to fail. All are the fastest that the manual says that the cameras can use. This allows for fast repeat times and helps keep the camera buffer from filling.

I have started taking pictures for our fire department. The lighting is obviously very challenging and there is no time to set up a controlled environment. I am looking for advice and insight on how to work better in these situations. Low ambient light, very bright directional light, highly reflective gear and equipment and generally fast paced. Thank you in advance for any ideas and suggestions. Frank.

Frank, I used do be the "public relations officer" for the Yukon, Oklahoma Fire Department.. Basically, this meant that I was authorized to be at (and inside) emergency locations. I had to train and prepare (as all of the "real" firemen did in the tower and other training. I was also "permitted" to help with cleaning, drying etc. of the hoses and other equipment, inventorying the equipment, and of course making emergency runs. I had a siren and lights on my personal car and was (in essence) a volunteer fireman. The department, at that time, had 18 full time firemen (red, blue and green shifts) and 20 or so volunteer firemen. They had enough regular firemen to run the initial truck to the emergency and then the off duty and volunteer firemen provided backup and second and third trucks in. This also included operation of the Emergency Squad truck. All off duty and volunteer firemen were notified (called in) by an emergency phone notification (this was your house phone doing an erratic ring) and when the phone was picked up, allowed the notified person to hear a recording of the address or location of the emergency. My point to all of this is that, as the "official" photographer, I also had other duties to help as needed.
Now, to your basic question. I constantly provided photos (mostly black and white) to the local news papers and also for tv news. The other job requirements allowed me to get photos in places that the "other newsies" wouldn't be allowed or couldn't get to. When shooting, I tried to keep the victims images unidentifiable. Meaning no straight on facial photos.. or the victims needed to be covered in smoke, water spray etc. Also no license plates in vehicle shots. If anything was different from that then you need photo permission forms from everyone.

I have recently purchased a canon 6D mark ii and a couple of smaller L series lenses. A pretty big upgrade for me coming from a T3. I was thinking about buying the 5D mark iv however I decided to spend some of the money on good glass also. One thing I didn't thing about was a camera strap since I was always just using my kit stap that came with the camera. I live in the pacific northwest and spend most of my time in the mountians shooting landscape and wildlife when seen. As of now the largest lens that I have is a Tamron 28-300 but am looking at purchasing the Tamron 150-600mm in the next two months. Most locations I have to hike into so typically everything is carried into my Lowepro pack however I have missed some really great shots due to the fact camera isn't ready. I am looking for a system that is comfortable and can be easily ready to shot with in a moments notice. It must be able to support heavy lenses. Basically im no pro but I don't want what I have spent my hard earned money on hitting the ground. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate them.

I have a Rugard strap that has the under arm strap in addition to the main.. it goes (in my case as I am right handed) over the left shoulder (and under the arm) and hangs under the right arm to the hip. Mine has a flip up carrier on the shoulder that holds 2 extra batteries and 6 extra memory cards. This is a good solution for me as I shoot a lot of nature and don't have to carry a camera bag. I do have a second camera that I use a 50mm f/1.8 or an 18-70 lens on for standard shots and I keep my 80-400mm lens on the main.. my "long" camera is a DX and the short to normal camera is FX.

I thought I read somewhere that a dedicated graphics card would speed up photo processing. But I would not think that would help as the bottlenecks would seem to be due to cpu speed, disk drive speed and file size issues.

So does a speedy graphics card get you anything in photo processing in Affinity, Ps etc - photographs only? No video.

Thanks

I have a dedicated Nvidia Gforce graphics processor/ accelerator with 8gb of memory. It is a 64 bit card and seems to give faster tighter images at higher resolution. I have a Windows machine with 64gb of memory (upgradable to 128 but not done yet) and 4 6tb high speed SATA drives (I only buy WD or any brand but Seagate. I used to work for Seagate in Oklahoma City as quality assurance and will never/ever purchase a Seagate product again). The graphics card does seem to speed up graphics in Lightroom and other graphics intensive programs... But, in Lightroom, you have to check the graphics accelerator box in the preferences area.

I've been using a Nikon D7000 (Dx format) for about 8 years and have accumulated several expensive lenses. I'm ready for a new camera and am interested in possibly one in the Fx format. I understand I can still use my Dx lenses but the Fx camera will automatically crop the frame to the Dx format. If I never buy any more lenses then it would be a stupid move, buying an Fx format camera and using it in a Dx format. At this time I don't know what other lenses, if any, I will want to buy (I'm 74 years young). If I buy more lenses I would buy Fx format of course. I would appreciate some advice, especially from anyone who has made a similar jump (from Dx to Fx). Thank you in advance.

I have 2 DX cameras (Nikon D7000 ((the wife's)), a Nikon D7100 and a Nikon D610) I have managed to replace the couple of DX lenses (which work fine on all but on the D610 it reverts automatically to DX mode) with FX lenses which work fine on all 3 cameras. This eliminates the issues or decisions of FX or DX. Remember that a DX camera will only use the center 2/3rds of the FX lens (the DX portion) but works fine. A DX lens will work fine on the FX camera but will either use the center 2/3rds of the sensor or will shift the camera do DX mode (which in essence uses the center 2/3rds of the FX sensor). An FX lens on a DX camera works fine and the DX camera will only display the area that is being used of the FX lens and discard (since the sensor is smaller than the incoming scene) anything that it doesn't need. AND, what you see through the viewfinder is what you get. By the way... the D610 uses the same battery as the D7100 and D7000 so there is also compatibility there.

You're correct.. I've been trying to get Aurora's new version (and the 2018 version) to work correctly since the last Windows 10 update... I don't think it was the update but have been trying to figure out what changed.. Aurora has also been working on it... (Skylum) to no good results.. don't think it is their fault we just haven't found the solution.. but it is ALSO a good program (when it works)

A friend of mine wants to buy her husband a photo vest or jacket and asked my advice. I used to use a photo vest back in the film days when i was using film and needed a place to keep all those film canisters. Am curious about whether any fellow "hogs" use photo vests and what brands they would endorse. Many thanks.

I'm somewhat fortunate. I have a Domke photo jacket that has zip off sleeves making it a photo vest. It also has a "rain" hood in a back zipper (though I've only used it once). If I'm in the field, I carry the zip on sleeves in my camera backpack or in the car for use if necessary.

While this is generally true... it isn't 100% true or accurate. Clearwater has a "public" park with a bandstand and large grassy area for viewing concerts. They have regular concerts with fairly big name acts (current and past rock groups, jazz bands, blues, etc. They fence and gate off the access to this area for the 3 day long concert events and sell tickets. During those times, event participants are restricted to the rights listed on the ticket (which may include size of camera and or lenses, or ability to photograph, record or otherwise make copies of the event. While this is "technically" on public property, admission is charged and participants can NOT bring in ice chests, food of beverages from outside. All must be purchased from the inside venders. Offenders may have their equipment confiscated and may face criminal charges. Public access granted by civic authorities does have it's limits and they have staffs of attorneys to make sure that these can not be circumvented.

I recently had a 2-hr tutoring session with the owner of our local Mac store. He is also a professional photographer. My goal was to get a few tips on using Lightroom. We did that, but then he suggested that I would enjoy using Luminar 2018 and showed me a few things that he does with that program. I downloaded it and am having fun using it for landscapes, but, for people/portraits, I have had no success and find that LR works much better. Comments?

I have Skylum's portrait Pro and love it for portraits. I use Lightroom for everything else. I do have to say this about Skylum products. They (in addition to regular updates) do a complete redo of their program about once a year.. I have the 2017 version, the 2018 version and now the 2019 versions… The updates are free but I paid about $60 for each of the "upgrades" to the next year. Adobe "rents" you Lightroom Classic CC, Lightroom CC (I only use this on cellphone or tablet), Photoshop, Adobe Spark, and 20gb of Cloud Storage for $9.99 per month or an annual fee somewhat less.. Right now, Adobe is offering the entire Adobe offerings for $39.95 per Month. (normally 59.95).

I am curious on people's thoughts and experiences regarding buying a camera from one of the used/refurbished camera stores. The two stores I am looking at is KEH and Adorama. I am leaning a little more towards KEH, but wasn't sure on others experience. I have bought used products (not cameras) before and it has really come down to the seller whether I had a good experience or not. There is a considerable price difference between $397 new to $328 refurbished/used, but I also don't want to risk having issues with the $328 price. Thanks in Advanced!

I have bought from both (and B&H) and have had no issues. I purchased a Nikon 80-400mm lens, and a Nikon D7o00 used from KEH and both are working well. The lens was in excellent shape with the glass being in great shape and included lens caps, case, and the Kirk 80-400 tripod adapter. I've had the lens for about 2 years and it works great. It is the older autofocus that uses the camera focus motor and was a decent price. I purchased to older D70s cameras (one from Adorama and the other from B&H and both were decent for what I paid.. don't use either because they required the Compact flash card and the D7000 uses 2 SD cards. Also the D7000 uses the same batteries as my D7100 and D610 so it makes shooting trips less complicated.

Has anyone used the Wasabi brand battery in their Nikon D7200 or D750 and if so what was your take on performance.

I have had Nikon En-EL15 batteries and then I've had Wasabi and many of the other "off" brand replacement batteries for the En-EL15. I've thrown away all of the "off brand" batteries. They did not last and were (in my opinion) not worth the "savings". Also, if I send my camera into Nikon for repair, they want to make sure that the battery is a Nikon. It isn't worth the risk.

There are several FREE Microsoft Window downloads that will allow you to view all RAW (whether Nikon or Canon) natively in Windows. I use these for general viewing but I use Lightroom and Photoshop for my processing/editing.

You already own a hard disk. It's reponse time is much faster than "the Cloud"'.

If you need to use Lightroom on mobil devices (is that possible?) maybe there

Your acess to Adobe's "Cloud" depends on cable or telephone service, your ISP,
its, upstream provider, various other servers (e.g., DNS) and the Internet backbone.
My Intenet service goes down quite frequently.

Actually, you are misinformed. If the internet is down, the cloud still works unless it has been 30 days since it last reported. The Adobe apps are installed ON YOUR HARDDRIVE. The only time the Cloud goes to the internet is for updates, reinstallation.. and I have it installed on 7 computers (4 desktops and 3 laptops) and it is fine for the $9.99 subscription as long as only two are logged in at any given time. If you try to log a third, it tells you that the two are already used and offers to turn off one or both while you work. If you do that, then later you can restart the other and turn off the extra. This is how I do 7 computers on two licenses.
