50x digital zoom.

Okay, that was new to me. Samsung is good stuff. Still, your compact probably has a better optical zoom. One thing for sure, the sensor in your compact is larger. You find a lot of interesting information when you google on "sensor size+image quality". What brand and type is your compact?

Cell phones are great, but they can reach out only so far. My Samsung cell phone goes to 8x, which is pretty good. But the point and shoot camera I carry is 20x, which really allows me to get distant shots. Sometimes that is important, especially with wildlife.

Cellphones have digital zoom. They cut off the sensor area. Your compact camera has an optical zoom. Always full sensor area.

I assume that all phones have digital zoom. That is no good. You just cut off the sensor area and loose pixels. Your point-and-soot has an optical zoom. You always have all pixels.

Guns and cameras have something in common. Gun fans always say the best gun you can have is the one you have on you when it is needed. The little .380 in your pocket might save your life if you get mugged or carjacked, while the more powerful .45 or .10mm sitting in your lockbox at home won't help you at all. And the little point and shoot camera you have on you when a spectacular picture opportunity comes up will let you get the photo, while your $2 or $3 thousand dollar camera at home won't help. For this reason, I always carry a small point and shoot camera with me, while I leave my better, more expensive camera at home. If I go for a particular photo, I take my DSLR, but that isn't my everyday camera. What say you?

I totally agree on the point-and-shoot camera. I have a little Sony compact DSC-W360. It is rather old by now, but it is far more compact than my iPhone 7 Plus. If I can, I love to use my Canon EOS-1D Mk. II N and a decent zoom for Street and Cute Cats and Dogs. Many people say that the picture quality from a smartphone is as good as a point-and-shoot. Sometimes, they might be right. However, the phone is always wide angle and is is often not very good at weird lighting condition. Most of all:
THE HANDLING IS TERRIBLE!
The touch screen a nuisance. I definitely dislike the phone when it comes to fast handling.

The next issue is about guns. But that is a very large area to discuss. I live in Scandinavia, in Sweden. We are POSITIVELY NOT allowed to carry a gun. I think that is very good. If I get car jacked (your example) I give them the car and I will to 99.9 % probability walk away unharmed. If I engage in a gun fight, what happens? Well I do not have to explain that more. To be shot in a criminal situation, if you are not a gang member, is very rare here. If everyone carried a gun, we would have far more gun based injuries here.
I store my gun (rifle) at home with vital parts in a safe.

If I am supposed to make photos on demand and be paid, I use my Canon EOS-6D and some L lenses and a Sigma ART 85/1.4. However, when I shoot for my own pleasure I love my Canon EOS-1D Mk. II N. It is heavy ("Newtonian Image Stabilization") and it is very nice to work with. Probably the same feel as the Nikon 3D. It is fast like a Kalashnikov. I can shoot funny dogs and cute cats very fast. It is perfect for Street. I normally use a cheap, but rather good, Tamron 18-200 mm Asph. When the 1D was new, it was around 4,000 dollars. I paid ZERO! I got it when I turned 70 from a good friends who had two more 1D bodies. The lens was USD 110 at B&H. I used the 1D body for exhibition pictures, but then I had the Sigma 85/1.4 Art attached. The 8.2 MPix are good enuff for a 12"x16" print. Here the lens sets the overall quality. Not the Mpix number... Pity I cannot show a big print from that camera here. I use an EPSON P-600 printer that takes up to A3+

I just love it! The composition is a little "unusual", which makes it more interesting. The scarf is a necessary item here. And more, the woman is VERY beautiful!

I have shot some macros last spring. However, I managed to scare away all interesting bugs. Macro is not my main photography interest, but it is definitely nice. Referring to the pic of the bee shot with an Oly system, the quality of my pics cannot compete with it. I am an old dog who could not buy expensive stuff earlier in my life, so I took it as a challenge to do good stuff with low-cost equipment. That kind of feeling stayed with me to some extent thru my entire life. Even if I can buy what I want today, I still find pleasure to get the most of old cameras and lenses. For professional use I go for Canon 6D, Canon L lenses and Sigma Art series. Privately I love to go out and shoot with my fast, and heavy, EOS-1D MkII N. The performance of that old brick is more than sufficient for "normal" use. That is the camera I shot these macros with. I used a Helios 44-2 58mm Russian Lens for M42 with an extension tube and adapter ring. Total cost for the equipment used: EOS-1D: Zero dollars (the same amount in all currencies), it was a gift from a friend. The lens, ring and tubes: approx. USD30.

I use older equipment, mostly digital though...Sony/Minolta camera and lens combos. AndyH started a good thread back around April 28 on putting together a great kit without utilizing the latest equipment .. title - "Assembling a DSLR outfit - the $2,000 challenge". That sounds like a lot of $$ but he was doing two kits (him and one for spouse). I've put togedther a rather large system for well under that figure with 4 DSLRs and a couple suitcases of used lens (and all the other goodies) that would let me do almost any shooting situation. Fun and quite capable equipment, fun process. I'm thinking of doing it again with either Nikon/Canon...just to play with all the great old glass, and modern glass that is getting harder to buy for Sony A-mount. Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This topic is very interesting. There is a similar (psychological) situation with teenagers and cell phones. The current Samsung Sx is just great!! Then the Samsung S(x+1) hits the market. Ohh, Uhh, YUCK Blaaah! My Samsung Sx is no good. Howl, sob, "I WANT A NEW ONE OR I DIE".
I find it kind of fun to take the use of old equipment for hi-quality photography to a sport. This time I stay in the digital corner. Film is for another discussion. I want to show you all some pics I have shot with THREE combinations:

1. My old Canon EOS-1D, Mk. IIN with Lens: Зени́т Ге́лиос 44 M-6, 58 mm, f/2 (made in Russia in the 70's) and an extension tube. (the weird plant)
2. The same EOS-1D with a rather new cheap budget zoom, a Tamron 18-200 Asph. Approx. USD100 (Couple at coffee table)
3. The same old EOS-1D with a NEW Sigma 85 mm f/1.4 Art (Concert)

-By the way, I have got the EOS-1D from a friend for my 70'th birthday. Thus, camera body cost was 0USD...

Does a 1968 Canon FL 55mm f/1.2 lens adapted to EF mount count?

The old Canon lenses are great. I use the modern EF system. Since I have a Canon AE1 with a 50 mm FD lens, I bought an adapter FD/FL-->EOS. There are two types of adapters. One with NO lens element. That one only goes for close ups. To be able to focus to infinity, is has to be a distance correc ting lens element in there. Even if that lens element is good, we do not have any Canon lens anymore.

Very high quality photo of that barn. I downloaded and blew it up. Very good! 6MP is often more than sufficient. I am very critical to the, for many yrs now, raging "MP-race". It seems more like a sales-thing. -Buy this fantastic 18 MP cellphone! Pffft! I have shot very good pics with my Canon EOS-1D, 4.1 MP! marketed 2001. Simple math says it is 16 yrs old. Yours are younger. Okay, low light performance is very limited. Good light, very good! It is heavy, fast and nice to work with. Perfect if you want to catch cyclists, youngsters on skate-boards, dogs and Parkour athletes in street environment. BAD: The battery pack that contains a set of TEN(!) NiMH AA cells welded in series, DIES sooner than expected...!
Conclusion from me: Keep that nice D70! far more precious than the market value says!

Of course I understand that nobody will be thrown out from a plane. I see the irony and humor. However, I still like Obama. He tries to make the USA a more humane society where greed is not the primary goal in life. He wants to give people health care regardless of income. A thing that no European will be without! He is the first president who had the guts to address the L**T issue! The previous, especially the republicans, were far too coward or had too little human feelings to do that. I like dollars, but to live from that only is impossible!

Just AMAZING pics! Do NOT get rid of that Pentax lens! I have a perhaps newer Super Takumar 200 mm f/4. I just got inspired to use it again. I will compare the pics with yours. Thank you for your article.
