Guns and cameras have something in common. Gun fans always say the best gun you can have is the one you have on you when it is needed. The little .380 in your pocket might save your life if you get mugged or carjacked, while the more powerful .45 or .10mm sitting in your lockbox at home won't help you at all. And the little point and shoot camera you have on you when a spectacular picture opportunity comes up will let you get the photo, while your $2 or $3 thousand dollar camera at home won't help. For this reason, I always carry a small point and shoot camera with me, while I leave my better, more expensive camera at home. If I go for a particular photo, I take my DSLR, but that isn't my everyday camera. What say you?

My thoughts are the cell phone camera will do in a pinch. Some of the phone photos I've seen are spectacular.

Cell phones are great, but they can reach out only so far. My Samsung cell phone goes to 8x, which is pretty good. But the point and shoot camera I carry is 20x, which really allows me to get distant shots. Sometimes that is important, especially with wildlife.

You could say the same thing about cars or pickup trucks or ballpoint pens or shoelaces. The best one is the one you have with you. And the one sitting at home does you no good at all.

A brief cell phone video of G****e F***d's final minutes changed the entire course of this nation's destiny... And likely the destiny of much of the world. No camera image has ever approached this magnitude of universal awareness generated from the aforementioned... Cell phones are so ubiquitous that there videos are now a pivotal adjunct to body camera footage...

I haven't owned or fired a firearm since leaving the army. Back in the day, I was issued an XM16E1 and took it to Vietnam. It tended to jam so it was replaced by an M-14 as I can recall. Since my job was to operate aerial photographic equipment, I was issued a 45 Callabre automatic.

Weh I can home to my old neighbourhood, lots of folks had permits to carry concealed weapons- the favourite anti-mugging gun was an S&W 38 calibre )detective special) a little snub-nose thig. Too much violence for me- I had enough so I moved to Canada where concealed firearms are a big no-no!

So... if I had to give you an answer: My cell phone is my.38, M Canon DSLR is my M-16 (except it works), my digitized medium format camera is my Howitzer, and my old 8x10 Linhof view came is my H-Bomb! I'm contomplathg getting a mirrorless model, that will be my Uzi (SMG) equivalent -I'm Jewish but still not allowed one in Canada!

I buy two pocket shirts, one for a P&S, one for my pens, notebook etc. Only if the P&S's battery dies do I use the cell phone for any thing but labels and serial numbers on things when I need the info to fill out an online form. Well a few times around the house in shorts and a t-shirt I will take a picture of the cats, dogs or my wife on the couch sound asleep "watching TV" with one or more cats using her for a heated cat bed. Those snapshots are Top Secret Ultra - do not let my wife know I took them, please . I am allergic to sudden trauma.

Well, the worst thing is to be in a situation where you need your S&W 9mm but all you have is your Canon P&S . . .

Well if they don't steal the camera the perp can be ID'd from your snapshot, maybe.

My best camera rarely be with me. Even when it's not being used it's still my best.

Interesting that you wrote this. As someone who carried a gun for well over 3 decades in the line of duty I’ve often thought about the similarities in techniques. Stance, breathing, smooth press on the shutter, target acquisition, technical sk**l, proper equipment, etc. Ive used the shooting positions of braced kneeling, barricaded position and shooting prone to great effect in photography. The biggest similarity is that people often prefer to buy equipment thinking it will improve their sk**ls rather than taking a course.
