it's all because of the facebook twirling community that started this idea and the youtube video Jim sent me... so I just had to try and it is quite easy to create!! So if you have Elements, you should give it a whirl!!

Beautiful! They all look very interesting and fun to do. Would you mind posting a link to the video that has instructions?

I just had 5 canvas done of previous Christmas cards I've designed and used Discount Canvas.com. Figured they were only to be used during the holiday season if they weren't all that good. Very cheap prices on sales, shipped immediately, and I found them to be excellent colors, wrapped edges, and no color bleeding. Although they were so cheap, they look very good quality to me. Excellent prices and shipping. I think Discount Canvas and Best Canvas may be the same company.

Love your countryside. The pastures with the mountains in the background are beautiful. That llama is indeed "on guard". Llamas will take the entire herd to a place of protection and defend them against dogs or coyotes. They've even been known to try to defend against cougars and bears, but of course they're no match. This one is probably very attentive to what's around them and quite attached to that herd of sheep. Nice photos!

I may be trying to do the impossible, but is there anyway to get a nice small print out of the attached image? It only has a resolution of 75. I'm not trying to make a big enlargement, just a small print. Thanks for any suggestions.

YES! I use Sony A77 and RX100 lll. Love them both. I've also had both Canon and Nikon gear in the past and sold them.

[quote=rdgreenwood]A friend of mine wrote seeking advice on an area with which I’m totally unfamiliar, archiving and photo databases. Here’s what he said, “I am going to scan a huge batch of very old family photos (negatives in a variety of antique formats) and hope to put them into a photo-friendly database so I can catalogue them. I would also love to develop collections of photos by time period, family member, location, etc. It would be great to be able to make these photos available to family members on the web. Might you have a recommendation for such a magical database app of this sort?”

He then went on to ask another question I couldn’t answer: “Also, if you have a recommendation on a negative scanner, that would be great. I've have looked at a few, but none have knocked my socks off yet. I'm hoping to spend no more than about $300. Let me know if you have a preference on something like this.”

Aside from the many replies on scanners, a suggestion for a personal photo database that would be available to either the public or family members (your choice) on the web would be TNG - The Next Generation. I was just at a genealogy meeting last night where I saw a demo of this software. Although I haven't used it, it seems like it would do everything you're wanting to do. A lot of options! Only $32.99. http://www.tngsitebuilding.com/

I also have not had good results by using C on the dial on front of the camera. Not in good focus. Good results using continuous in the drive settings. As you can tell, I'm not an expert photographer but enjoy it immensely. And enjoy this camera! Got it the day it came out for a trip to Alaska last July. I'm trying to get better with it and understand the settings.

There is more than one way.
For example, I like "focus peaking" because it tells me quickly that the focus is what I want. That requires "DMF" (or manual). That can be set with the 4-position dial at the bottom of the front of the camera on the left side when holding it in shooting position. Then, in the menus, you will find a setting that lets you assign focus lock to pushing the shutter halfway down. When shooting birds I like to focus on the eye and the quickly, while holding focus, re-frame and shoot. This is very fast and easy. There are a few other ways as well.

The DMF is not necessary for the focus lock, btw.

I don't let the camera "focus lock". That may work in some applications but I've had no good results with birds or little critters. YMMV.

I have used the focus peaking also. I have been shooting birds and that's exactly what I thought I was doing. Focus on the eye, hold the focus, re-frame and shoot. But when I check the photo in the camera by enlarging it fully in playback, it indicates with a frame where the focus point was and sometimes it is in the center rather than on the eye of the bird even though I held the shutter. Would single shot or continuous drive effect it? I've used shutter and aperture priority both. I can't find that setting in the menu right now but I think I have it turned on- have to get the book out. Btw- I've had great opportunities lately but can hardly get a BIF. Another not related question - when I post I never see my post appear on this forum. Wondering how you saw it. Thanks for your response and help.

Click on the Menu button, then at the top make sure the camera icon is highlighted, scroll down one levelusing the round selector on the back of the camera to highlight page numbers. There is a list of pages at the top 1 thru 9. Scroll over to page 4 and select that page. Focus area should be at the top of the list. Selecting it will give you the choice of Wide, Center, Flexible Spot (manual), Expand Flexible Spot, Lock-On AF-Center.

I've tried most of these. When focusing on the subject, the Lock-On AF- Center will only focus in the center of the frame? Which did you use on you bird photos that were focused but off center? Or were they cropped? Which setting do you prefer? Thanks for your reply and your help!

How do you best do focus and re-compose with this camera? Aperature, single shot, hold button half way to focus, re-compose and shoot? When previewing the photo in the camera and enlarging, the point of focus is often in the center rather than where it was intended. I must be doing it wrong. Suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance.
