My father passed away at 91 yrs in 2003. We often passed time as he flipped thru photo albums reminiscing. Each year of his youth his parents possibly had taken 4 pictures while I was shooting hundreds on my kid’s Christmas Mornings, Soccer games and horseback riding, etc. The albums of my father showed the family, a country house and focused on people vs possessions and activities. I recently looked at the boxes of my parents slides in Kodak Carousels each labeled as trips, Egypt, Europe, etc. Some 60 to 100 slides on had one slide of any of us, the rest being scenery. I don’t think I or anyone will find amateur pictures of churches, castles and farm land very interesting. A compromise between 4 pictures per year and thousands is my thought. I book for each kid with discards buy kid for them to decide keeper. All 3 of my kids are highly successful but they and their friends are minimalists and they are not burdened by possessions - pretty smart. When our parents passed, we and our kids picked desired objects with a trunk for each one. Years later, as adults, cut glass and silver objects are just not desired.

At 72, I’ve been walking for 2 yrs. I walk (vs hike) 5 miles in the woods daily with my dog and in that time have lost 50 pounds. I traded my D750 for a Sony a6600 (lighter and smaller) when had cervical disc surgery June 2021. Just had spinal surgery, possibly facing a walker for a month or more so have decided, life is too short, so I’m going to be ridiculous and get a Sony a 1.
With whatever time I have left, I’ve got to get all my photos “organized” so they are not a burden to wife and 3 kids. Retirement has responsibilities. Wishing you a quick and functional recovery ❤️‼️

My tech you son in law has a Google pixel 6 and I am impressed! He took a challenging evening closeup picture of my dog on the beach with a sunset red sky in the far distance.
My iPhone 11 got the dog with good exposure but the beautiful red sky was just a bright sunset.
His phone was more detailed of the closeup of the dog, lighting great, even capturing the red sunset. Then he showed a person and a tree he didn’t want, clicked edit, touched each object and bang they were gone. Like photoshop in a bottle and the removals were flawless - could not detect where those areas looked manipulated. WOW!

Your thoughts to simplify are what I have been feeling for years! I believe I will give it a try.
There is something to being happy and less stressed. I am tired of carrying around hard drives and coddling them and shouldering the responsibility.
Thanks for your help.

With Lightroom Classic, I hate the responsibility of backing up and making copies and keeping them stored in use, on site and offsite. I know my computer is going to fail or get hacked and that a virus could even be in a backup - I just want to do photography and not IT work. In a recent family wedding where I did some pictures in places the professional photographer was not at, I just used (u r going to criticize me) Google Photos and was pleasantly surprised by the results. Also, I feel that downloading in Classic is cumbersome and not intuitive.

I am considering getting a subscription to Lightroom (cloud) just to simplify. I have been hesitating because the cloud version was new and did not have as many features but understand that gap is narrowing. Yes, it is more expensive, but I have hard drives, backup software and “wasted” time and some worry.

Can anyone tell me what the Cloud version cannot do vs Classic that you would view as a big disadvantage? Currently I do not use Photoshop.

Thank you for your help!

Avoid the “bird feeder shot.” Have a small platform hidden by leaves and don’t have the food lure visible and have a small “perch” branch with leaves removed inconspicuously where you want the subject to perch so the shot looks natural. Just a suggestion.

In a way, digital has made photography much harder. We have a bigger and more mobile population and between phones and cameras, seems EVERYONE has a camera. When I am on a trip, I assume 1 million pictures have been taken of a spot so unless there is a 1 in a million unique weather pattern today, I feel that I must really work hard to find a unique perspective and then hope that there is a moment when no one is blocking my “vision.”

Helped a friend roaming 2nd photographer in an open night reception venue with poor lighting, with no flash, used D750 with auto iso 12,500 and got really amazing shots. I don’t do weddings and the outcome was surprising. Like my 750.

Loved Picasa but knew had limitations and keep delving into Lightroom. To me Google Photos is similar to Picasa ... very easy.

I REALLY APPRECIATE all of the information. I took a class at a local technical school and an internet course and a book as big as a dictionary and none mentioned “the cloud.” Thank you Hogs for going above and beyond!
