Okay, it's come down to this. I ordered a 1Tb SSD and the usual cloning cable plus 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 adapter today. I had debated even before the issue with over achieving ON1 Photo Raw whether to replace the C: drive with an SSD. I figure I'll see what difference in performance I see. Quite honestly, I'm not that optimistic. One of the posters suggested it's not an IO problem, I tend to agree but am interested enough to try. It's less than $150 for a Crucial and stuff through Amazon. Then, I fully expect to have to bite the bullet for a new GPU. Going back to my prerequisites, bus powered only (no hookup for a second fan), 4gb, and less than $200 eliminates a number of suggestions even though I'm really appreciative. Price begats performance, that I'm aware.... The 1060 GPU is in the $300 plus ballpark. I couldn't find a 1060 ti version. That sort of pushes me back to its predecessor, the 1050 ti single fan version with 4gb onboard, which is available for less than $200. I'll probably give that a shot with fingers crossed. If that doesn't help.... well, there are only a couple ways to go, new computer (no!!) or go up to a more expensive card.

Again, make sure your drivers are up to date and check the performance before spending cash trying to solve the problem.

The SSD is not a bad investment, you will see a big performance increase. But if there's a compatibility issue with your ON1 software and the GeF driver version you have you will still have issues.

Have you tried updating the drivers on your video card? If not I'd start there.

Check page 298 of your manual.

If for some reason that is not the page. Check the Table of Contents and go to Technical Notes > Other Accessories

I'm not sure if this is the primary or secondary reason but it is actually it is good that the lens can go past infinity a bit. That extra play allows for AF Fine Tune adjustments which could otherwise prevent AF from achieving focus at infinity.

I frequently stay in hotels. When I leave my camera in the room I hang the Do Not Disturb sign. The hangers sometimes come off the door so I recommend closing the door on the bottom corner of the sign. Works especially well if your door is outside.

It looks like you now have a reference photograph for the speeds on the dial. Many computer monitors and TV's run at 60Hz. Number the stops on the dial then take a picture with each position, ascending in speed.
The last unbanded picture should be 1/60.

Faster speeds should have black bands. Slower might be the whole picture but some areas more exposed.

I take the opposite point of view. If you want it, buy it. You can either keep or sell what you already have. "Making do" and regretting how you are living doesn't make sense to me.

I suspect it is a defective sensor, not just a scratch.
May I suggest taking a picture of a brightly lit white wall or piece of paper. Make sure it is well out of focus. I suspect you will see the same line but it will be sharp.

You can check which were installed by going to Start > Settings > Update > Windows Update.

There should be a history of updates on the right where you can get more information about them. I suspect Larry is correct and the updates downloaded the last time you were online. I'm not aware of Windows being able to circumvent Wi-Fi settings to get online.

As for disk usage you can hot CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to bring up task manager. Make sure you select more details at the bottom. Check the CPU and Disk columns for high usage which should allow you to find the offending process(es). Then it's a matter of googling its name with "high disk/CPU usage".

While I have not been to Mt. Rushmore yet, I can offer some advice to help in your planning. I highly recommend The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE). It is a map tool that allows you to find out the position of the sun and moon at any given time. On the main interface you can tell if your subject will be in shadow or not. You can even drop a separate pin from your location on to the subject and it will give you distance, bearing, and the delta in elevation, all relative to your position. You can fiddle around with your position pin to find out exactly when and where you need to stand to place the sun/moon in the frame (where you want it!). It is by far my most used photography application.
There is a free desktop web application that I'll link below, there is also a smartphone version available for purchase. Worth every penny in my opinion.

I just ordered this same lens on KEH yesterday. Even after taking advantage of the 10% off their select used Nikon stock, this is a deal. I am half tempted to cancel my order and get it from you.

Help me to understand.

I'm breaking into Infrared capture

I shoot raw.

White Balance has to be adjusted in raw processing. I get that.

Many of the online instructional videos suggest setting a custom white balance in camera for IR capture.

Is this to make the image when viewed at time of capture more useful/recognizable/interpretable
or
is something else happening/occurring?

Thanks

Your RAW images will likely be all red. If you plan on converting them to black and white then it won't matter. Setting a custom white balance will shift all the color information to the right. With the filter I have the skies will be red, foliage yellowish or glowing white, people blueish. You can channel swap red and blue for the blue sky effect.
Some cameras, including my D3100, fail at setting a custom white balance in camera. I need to do this in Capture NX. Lightroom for some reason does not let me shift the white balance as far. RAW Therapee can also work but not as good results as Capture NX.
