I didn't see a section for repairs, so feel free to move this to a more appropriate section.

I recently scored a classic Nikon F, chrome, leather insert on prism. In good cosmetic condition, considering its age - a few scuffs, two little dents on the prism housing. The shutter sounds good. A little dirt in the viewfinder.

But...the speed markings on the shutter speed dial have worn/flaked off. Since the dial has no stop positions this makes shooting difficult. Any suggestions for a fix? Other than the meter prism! I'd like to keep the cost down, of course!

Many thanks in advance!

Thanks for the quick reply! I just noticed you're in Dallas. Just up the road from us here in Jonesboro.

Problem is that even clunkers seem a little costly. Steve Gandy will work on the F, but for close to $200. Yikes!
I think I'll look for a repair manual for the F. With that and a basket case F I might be in business.

I have this Nikon F (FTn, with photomic view finder), basically is the same as yours. The speed dial on top as showing in my picture, it has a black dot on the side for speed positioning, and it also feels 'click stop' when turning the dial. Hope this can help you!

That's a lot different than the dial on my F2

Thanks!
I have downloaded Mike Butkus' manual for the F and it has a pic of the dial. If the dial had a stop* as many cameras do I could set to 1/1000, for example and walk down to whatever. But since there's no stop life is ... interesting.

*By stop I mean that the dial as it is on my Pentax MX will rotate to 1/1000, then you need to go to lower speeds, and not directly to B. Hope that is clear.

I recently had my 2 beloved Nikon Fs stolen in a home burglary (also losing my D800 and several lenses). Because I upgraded both (in the early '70s) to FTn status (through-the-lens-metering) I have the original viewfinders. (see pix). The more complicated one has a metering system in it (requiring a battery, which may be hard to find), which includes aperture and ASA selector dials. (It comes in its own leather case.)

But, that's not all! I've also got a Nikkor 28 MM F/3.5 wide-angle lens in ITS own leather case, plus UV and polarizing filters that fit that lens. Everything is in immaculate condition, as they belonged to my dad, who took very good care of his gear. I'd love the think that they could be put to use again.

You can have them all for $100 plus shipping. PM me if interested. Personal check or PayPal (better) accepted.

It looks like you now have a reference photograph for the speeds on the dial. Many computer monitors and TV's run at 60Hz. Number the stops on the dial then take a picture with each position, ascending in speed.
The last unbanded picture should be 1/60.

Faster speeds should have black bands. Slower might be the whole picture but some areas more exposed.

Sometimes our house resembles a tidal pool. The tide goes out, and many marvels are revealed. The tide comes in, all is hidden again.

Nice price for the stuff! Those plain prisms hold their value exceptionally well. Not only are they a bit lighter in weight, they at least seem to be brighter than the metered versions.

My thought, exactly. Not much available, though.
