For those who watch Netflix, here's an interesting article.

What am I overlooking? I went to the link in pdf format and saw all the subgenres that were listed, each preceded by a number. But how is that number to be entered or searched on the netflix site? In short, what's the number for?

A bit on the pretentious side. It reminded me of Mel Brooks's first film, a 3+ minutes project called "The Critic." Brooks is the narrator.

It's an awful way to have to live. Friends of mine never answer the phone without the caller first speaking to the answering machine.

We have caller ID, which keeps us from picking up on numbers and names we don't recognize. I stopped picking up and instantly hanging up on unrecognized callers when I learned that picking up gives the caller, mechanical or otherwise, assurance that yours is in fact a "live" number. It's then placed in a data base consisting of other live numbers. And yes, I agree. It's a helluva way to live.

 What drives me crazy is the seemingly overuse of the term. No one ever gives anything anymore; they gift it instead. Hearing that term is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. It's apparently a good thing I retired from teaching composition before the term crept into writing, for they'd probably have to carry me away in a straightjacket.

I also taught composition for many years. Now, if you don't mind, I'll grade your composition. In your first sentence, you use the word "seemingly," an adverb, but you should have used the adjectival form, "seeming." (You wouldn't write "apparently overuse," would you?) In your last sentence, you write "straightjacket," but the correct spelling is "straitjacket."

My most irritating word: ABSOLUTELY. (I had a shiver down my back while typing the damn word.) Just listen for it and then add it to your list of fingernail-on-chalkboard experiences. :-D

According to numerous corrections in the comments following the Metallica version, that's really the Trans Siberian Orchestra's version instead.

My wife had a torn retina not long after the operation, but the retina specialist did a good job of repairing by laser. Your problem is different, but the skill of the specialist. Let us know how it turns out...but there may be some healing time involved. Good thoughts to you.

Perhaps it'll be hard. But there's an equally good chance it'll be moldy. Yech!

This isn't the whole film, but it is a key scene from it.

Gene Wilder's reaction shots are priceless.

No one gets out alive, best we can do is try for a graceful exit.

Apologies if this sounds pompous or naive, but, at the age of 80, I'm still hoping to die with these words from Dylan Thomas rattling around in my head:

"Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

(I taught college literature courses, and from that experience I've come to see that a little bit of rebellion, however futile, does wonders psychologically whenever one's mind turns to end matters. However, I'll probably do more whimpering than raging on my terminal bed...if I'm lucky enough to be in bed at that moment, and not in a mess of twisted metal on I-90.)

Sorry. didn't mean this to be a downer-inducer.

Just acquired a new Macbook Pro with 8gb ram and 128gb memory. (The cost of the 128 was as high as I could afford to go.) I'd now like to buy a 1 tb external hard drive and use it as a repository for inactive files from the Mac and loads of photo and other files (no video or music) from two different PC machines. I cannot afford a solid state external drive. I've limited my possibilities to three: 1)Seagate backup plus slim, 2)WD, and 3)Toshiba Canvio Slim II. All sell for $55-$60. Here's the problem: All of them receive lots of positive reviews on Amazon and Best Buy. BUT, all of them also receive a small number of horror stories based on lost files, incompatibility with Mac or PC formats, problematic installation, and other warning-filled complaints. That is often followed by stories about bad customer service departments and/or difficulty in returning drives. I'm new to both Macs and external drives, and I'm seeking to avoid a bad experience while becoming acclimated to the world of Apple laptop--though I've been using an iPhone and iPad for some time. Recommendations?

A good source of information on both cameras can be found here -

I've had the FZ200 for around 2 years and I love it. Prior to it, I had (and still have) a Canon sx40.
Houghton's book and youtube videos on the FZ200 are quite good.

I am an unqualified fan of my large olive green Tenba messenger bag. I wear it across my chest, or carry it by the top handle, or drape it on one shoulder. That way, I never feel I'm being punished by only one position. It carries a 15" laptop easily, and it never says "camera bag."
I've taken my Tenba to 3 weeks in France, 3 in St. Croix, and 2 in Indonesia. When I'm not using it for photography, I consider it a briefcase. Take a look at it here:

What flavor is the koolaid ?

Before you glibly dismiss these fires in Indonesia as the sole concern of kool-aid drinking liberals or tree-hugging do-gooders, make some effort to learn the indisputable facts about this issue. It's never too late to learn, so why not take the time to do so?
