External hard drive for new Macbook Pro

Just acquired a new Macbook Pro with 8gb ram and 128gb memory. (The cost of the 128 was as high as I could afford to go.) I'd now like to buy a 1 tb external hard drive and use it as a repository for inactive files from the Mac and loads of photo and other files (no video or music) from two different PC machines. I cannot afford a solid state external drive. I've limited my possibilities to three: 1)Seagate backup plus slim, 2)WD, and 3)Toshiba Canvio Slim II. All sell for $55-$60. Here's the problem: All of them receive lots of positive reviews on Amazon and Best Buy. BUT, all of them also receive a small number of horror stories based on lost files, incompatibility with Mac or PC formats, problematic installation, and other warning-filled complaints. That is often followed by stories about bad customer service departments and/or difficulty in returning drives. I'm new to both Macs and external drives, and I'm seeking to avoid a bad experience while becoming acclimated to the world of Apple laptop--though I've been using an iPhone and iPad for some time. Recommendations?

I've had good luck with OWC check them out... Their website has many enclosures and connectivity options. Prices are fair. Warranties are clearly stated.

Regardless of your situation, a cheap hard drive is worse than no hard drive at all. It's like buying the cheapest parachute you can find.

I've been getting WD Black drives, but now they have Re (not Red - that's something else.). Re are enterprise class drives, certified to run 24/7.

Hitachi drives are excellent, and WD now owns them. I hate to say it, but you really need two external drives. With just one, you have no backup.

Nothing beats G-Drive. Best source is B&H Photo. All sizes and shapes. Also, you need two of them!
