It's a shame that the word "telemarketing" even exists. It's gotten so bad that if I don't recognize a number on caller ID, I pick up the phone and immediately hang up. I used to tell them to put me on the No Call list, and they agreed, but that doesn't seem to help. Even adding my name to the National No Call list hasn't stopped them. There are many organizations that are exempt from that list.

I think I may start listening to them, talking a lot, asking them questions, and generally wasting their time. I may also call them back and ask them for money. I know that in many cases, it isn't possible to call telemarketers. What we need is a way to block certain phone numbers, the way we can block spam.

EDIT: Maybe we can block them.

I just have fun with it now. I ask a ton of questions. Then at the end I tell them I have to ask my children about buying anything because the judge says I am not not allowed to make financial decisions.

My wife stayed on the phone with a telemarketer for the longest time once and when she was done I asked her why. She said, as long as they were talking to her they weren't talking to anyone else.

I have a friend that's a telemarketer, the potential they have for earnings is way up there

You can block numbers on your smart phone. Google "call blocker apps". If you have a landline the phone company has a number blocking service but you have to pay to use it usually. Naturally, The Phone Company hates to let subscribers block calls but I think most PUC's have required such a service to be available.

I have a friend who does a great east European accent and when he gets a telemarketer he uses it to whine about his rather large lazy wife and the six ungrateful kids plus his annoying mother in law. One time he had the marketer on the phone for an hour. He actually likes it when they call because he has fun wasting their time and the comedy aspect of the moment makes him laugh.

What's funny about the no call list is that the exempted ones are really ones that I don't want, especially the political calls.

Regardless, enforcement is a joke. Not a problem,we pay a lot of money for people to keep making laws.

Jerry, the vast majority of the time, my home phone is forwarded to my cell (iPhone). There is a way to block numbers on that. If I get a call from some telemarketer, I simply block their number.

The number of calls I get per month that actually ring through are down to, maybe, 1.

I just received a call that showed up as local, as in my little community that consist of one stop sign. I was interested enough to answer and it was some scammer from CA. How did he get it to show up as a local call?
My little community has no call centers.

There are re-routing procedures that allow them to show different originating numbers. Supposedly there is legislation in process to tighten this up. Yeah, right.

So they are using deception in order to get you to answer, kind of sums up the whole purpose of their call. Scammers.

I have a Panasonic phone with a base phone and 2 satellite phones. According to the directions it is possible to block certain numbers that you know are telemarketers, however, I'm still trying to figure out how to retrieve my messages as it is a lot more complicated than my old AT&T, and I found that once I had put my number into the Do Not Call Data Base, it cut down immensely on telemarketers.

It's gotten so bad that if we don't recognize the # calling we will not answer the phone at all. It happens so often. It's like when are they going to get a clue to stop calling.

It's an awful way to have to live. Friends of mine never answer the phone without the caller first speaking to the answering machine.
