Hi Steve

This for the critique of the photo, I will make the lighting changes you suggested. I am really interested in people giving me their opinions, it helps me to become a better photographer.

Shutterbug, if after straightening the horizon, the car is still appearing at the bottom, I'd crop that out. I love, love, love your point of view on the shot!!!!! It's a "wow" photo for sure!!

Some times you just can't get the scene that you want. That is why I would like to have congress pass a bill outlawing power and telephone poles and bill boards. Also, all car should be collapsible into a brief case to carry with you so that there would never be a parked car. We also need special trees that hold fall colors for an additional 3 week in order to allow everyone time to get fall color shots.

Hello from Missoula, Mt. Joined a week or two ago and really like the forum format. It's just like a motorcycle one that i use and is the perfect format. A question, I am planning on getting into some panoramic shooting, any suggestions on programs to use will be greatly appreciated.

For moderate to good quality image and if you are not looking to place a mural on a 30 foot wall, then a tripod with a pan head, any moderate priced camera (around $300 and up), and most of the better photo editors will get you into it where you can create images for large home and office walls. The camera does not need to be a DSLR but you may find yourself better off with one.

Welcome, and as for your dept chair there are a number of definitions of academic one of which is "Learned or scholarly but lacking in worldliness, common sense, or practicality.";-). I like to remind my brother this. He has enough degrees to paper a large wall. I believe that there is only one rule in life, and it is that you harmlessly enjoy life and bring joy to others. Having seen your web site, I will tell you that you have brought a smile into mine.

You may want to try to get a copy of Scott Kelby's book "Digital Photography". Also to quote a phrase that I used to hear on an old ESPN Saturday morning hunting show (sponsored by the NRA of course) "Shoot more, shoot more often". Relax it's fun. the camera wont bite, and I bet that you will do just fine.

That crop is perfect. I think it says a lot about an image that can be processed many ways and they all look good. You might want to print and frame your favorite version and hang it on the wall.

I have a philosophical question here. Do you wish to express infinity (cropped) or terminal (un-cropped)? Most people will prefer to express infinity, it implies a most secure prospect. Others would prefer to imply impermanence. So I would say that whether cropped or not cropped depends what do you wish to express? It can get deep so you may want hip-waders and nose clamps ;-).

You know the more that I think about it if this were my shot (which it is not), I would go back and take another shot as a companion shot. I would shot with the trellis entering the frame from the upper right and winding down to the lower left (to be in color). Then using the original in black and white. Hand both in a hall way with one on one side and the other on the other side.

I think it is abstract. One more suggestion (since the B&W worked out so well), you might try cropping off the far right side so that you don't see the pattern ending. I think repeating patterns look best most (but not all) of the time when you don't see the pattern beginning and/or ending.

Just my two cents, give it a try and let me know what you think,

Eric

I see where you are coming from, but I like the terminating end. I think both would be good, just a matter of what you want to say I guess. This is one of those shot that has so many possibilities from just leave it as it is too... wherever you want to go. Very nice shot. Will JWilliams0469 please stand up and take a bow.

Howdy all, I just stumbled across this site, and signed up for the daily digest, and have liked what I've seen so far. I was born and raised in Alaska, learned photography when i was 8 on an old 35mm Pentax (no idea what model it was, I think it's still in Bahrain since it was stolen). I'm glad that I did learn the fundamentals of photography and sometimes find it amusing to work with people that have only worked with digital cams. Trying to explain what ISO, f-stop, and traditional film concepts to one that has no idea what I'm talking about is always fun.

Currently I have several Olympus', Sony's and a Fujifilm - but my goto cam is the Olympus d510. I'm part of the local Urban Explorers Association, and get to gointo some of the abandonded buildings here. Fantastic shots!

thanks

I Read Somewere That We All Are Beta Testing For Microsoft

We are; that's how they get away with putting out new operating systems without fully testing them. They don't have to. We do it for them.

I have a feeling that it is the same for Microsoft's operating systems. I am a retired teacher in an University. Each time Windows releases a new version they offer the students who have a college ID the program for the cost of shipping.

The students use them and I think that is where Microsoft learns how to update them. I know that hundreds of students at the college where I am at order them and use them.

Seems to me, that some of these put together systems from all the major brands ought to give so many of them away for certain people to test them at no cost to the tester...

When do you need a model release?

Do I need one if I use a picture of some ones dog?

What if I take a picture of a dog in a contest and the handler is in the picture?

Can I use the pictures in my portfolio if they are not for sale?

You are opening a real can of worm here. This kind of question is best asked to an attorney, others would do well not to answer. Any attorneys out there?

Nikon, Canon, whatever. The one thing that nobody needs is THAT person. When someone says something like that just turn and walk away. He obviously has issues that you don't need to deal with. You have a life to enjoy. I used to work at a place where almost every morning I would hear two co-workers argue whether Audi or BMW was the best. It gets old.

Hi,
Your question should be, "What am I going to do with the photographs"
If like most of us we are unlikely to make 24x30 prints the answer to me is clear. The Canon EOS50 is a great camera and the Rebel is superb for MOST people. If I were spending that sort of money I would go for the Canon EOS 50D and spend the rest of the money on a macro lens, a good tele zoom or better still a much better printer.
The end result, a print, is no better than the printer. We spend thousands of dollars on cameras and lenses and gadgets and then kill the whole thing with an average quality printer. Like buying a Ferrari and expecting high performance by putting in kerosene. Never made sense for me.

Incidently look for a used EOS5D on Ebay, it could be mine and I had it stolen last week. I replaced it with a used Grey Canon Rebel and I cant tell the difference at 16x20 prints.
Hope this helps.

Ian

Listen to this man folks. He speaks the whole truth about everything that he says. Whether your thinking Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony, whatever or even brand A vs brand B. Also, with the newer cameras, for 99.9% of us the same is true of the full frame vs APS-C . We will rarely if ever find ourselves in a position where the lesser camera is not enough to do the job that we want. It is more likely that the issue will be our lack of skill in using the equipment that we have. He is also correct on the attention needed on the printer (also paper).

Macs are fine machines, especially good for film editing and graphics design. They are the mainstay of every television station's editing room and are the best machines for that purpose. I never suggest that Mac users should go buy a PC. Choice is GOOD.

Many years ago, when mac was trying to find a niche because pcs had the business environment sewed up, macs were superior with video and other graphics. I would question that at this point however. I've been doing video with my 5D MkII, 1080p and burning it to blu ray. I'd heard about Final Cut Pro and mac's ability to "do it." I borrowed my son's mac to see how much superior it was with video. What I found is that Final Cut Pro lacked features that were essential and available to me in Pinnacle 14 and the mac itself choked on the job. My experience within the last year with this makes me believe that mac may have lost its edge.

The editing machines they use in TV stations are not home user machines. There are much more powerful and the software is not the same, either.

Some years ago, Mac was WYSIWYG and PC wasn't. That's not true anymore. But a lot ... maybe most ... graphic artists prefer the Mac, maybe because there is specific software available not available for PC. Or maybe, like me, they have tons of files in that format and changing would not make any sense.

I don't where my quote is above. Not that it matters. I think that most of us now agree that equipment selection is pretty much a matter of each of us determining our personal needs and trying to find what will best fill those needs. Advice is appreciated but badgering is not. And for my part I hope that each of us is happy with and remains happy with our choices.
