I am not "new" to photography, but I still need to understand allot more. Does anyone have a comment on which to buy, a Canon 7D or a Canon 5D Mark ll. I bought a 7D on ebay, but I've always wondered if my pictures were of the quality of a new 7D. I'd like to start out new. It's probably not practical, but right now I have some time to enjoy learning a few things and I want to start out fresh. A comment on a "must have" lens would be great, as well!
Thanks,
Cindy

Great question. I use a 50D now and I like it a lot, but I've been thinking about upgrading and these are the two I've looked at. I look forward to everyone's input.

Hi,
Your question should be, "What am I going to do with the photographs"
If like most of us we are unlikely to make 24x30 prints the answer to me is clear. The Canon EOS50 is a great camera and the Rebel is superb for MOST people. If I were spending that sort of money I would go for the Canon EOS 50D and spend the rest of the money on a macro lens, a good tele zoom or better still a much better printer.
The end result, a print, is no better than the printer. We spend thousands of dollars on cameras and lenses and gadgets and then kill the whole thing with an average quality printer. Like buying a Ferrari and expecting high performance by putting in kerosene. Never made sense for me.

Incidently look for a used EOS5D on Ebay, it could be mine and I had it stolen last week. I replaced it with a used Grey Canon Rebel and I cant tell the difference at 16x20 prints.
Hope this helps.

Ian

Thanks for your reply. I have the 7D, already. I guess I should have asked if full frame is better. I am not that far in knowledge, but just want to learn on a keeper and not have to upgrade. The lenses are a big question, as well.
I hope you find your camera. I thought I lost mine and I "freaked"! lol
My profile tells alittle about why I have some time, a good thing! :)

Ian, I agree that spending money on the glass is important, but I also realize that I'm not getting the most out of my glass with the 50D. I bought a 17-40L and the sensor in the 50D isn't 100% so I loose some of the benefit of this nice lens. I'll be getting to retirement where I'll have more time and money to spend so I want to get the most out ofmy equiptment.
Happy shooting.

If you can swing the $$$, full frame is always going to supply a better image, especially for landscape and nature shots. It may not be especially noticeable at portrait range, but I'd take a 5D in a minute over my 50. And anybody who does't agree can trade me their 5D.. :)

Straight to the point! My Dad is a dentist, but also raises "Whitetail Deer", for genetics. An awesome creature, by the way. We "shoot", by the way of a camera, so all is good. :)
Thanks for your input!

I used the 28-135mm. Do you have any thoughts on a better lens that has a realistic price tag?
BTW, do cameras or lenses "become" bad? If you buy on ebay, can there be a lens or camera with less image quality through use.....or are they "true to the end", I guess you'd say.
I have allot to learn. :)

I have a Canon 5DMK11 and I love it..I upgraded from a rebel and the difference is amazing..not sure how much difference there will be upgrading from a 7D though..as far as lenses..depends on what you do with them..get the best you can afford..my favorite is the 24-70 2,8..saving for the 70-200 2.9..good luck

Yes ........ lenes get dirty and have to be professionally cleaned, the same goes for camera bodies.A good all around lens is the Tamron 18/300.....it is moderately priced .U can check it out at www.bhphotovideo.com

I've played with a 5D MKii and it is simply an amazing camera. I'm not sure of the overall difference besides it being full frame from the 7D. The 7D has some nice "updates" that the 5D MKii doesn't (more focal points comes to mind). The 5D MKii I believe is a heavier body so take that into mind, it with my 24-70 was a monster, I'm sure it was a workout.

Saying that if I had the $$ I'd upgrade to the 5D in a heartbeat. I'm saving waiting for the 5D MKiii, it's been rumored to be coming down the pike for over the last year.

The 28-135 is considered one of the better consumer lenses. It is soft at wide open apertures and performs best at f8 and smaller apertures..

As to the full-frame 5dII and the 7d, these debates go on on every photo forum and those who have each defend them to the end..

The fact is "full-frame" is arbitrary and only exists because for decades a 35mm format was considered a "standard". There are many cameras with larger formats than the "full frame" 5d's... Kodak medium formats, Hasselblads, and so on.. So, it really boils down to lust for the latest gear by most, and not really discernible differences at the image size and quality that 99% of us shoot at..

If you want nice, large landscapes, then I believe that the 5dII or 1Ds series are the cameras for you.. If you do most else, the 7D and many others are world-class performers................. You aren't missing anything with either..
