Have you considered a custom WB? I generally do one for indoor work by either using a Gray or White card for the first shots but lately, because i've been shooting Equine indoors and outdoor I use a custom setting of 4200Kelvin....and have left it set as such even for every day shooting...

Incidentally, shooting Equine in an indoor Arena brings it's own problems with light. The one I've been shooting in recently has white 'let some light in' panels on the high roof, but not an over abundance unfortunately. It also has an excuse for lights but they are next to useless. The left hand side of the Arena is where the natural light comes in, and has a canopy extending some twenty foot outwards but that only stands at half the height of the ceiling but is a nightmare at this time of year while the sun is low.....as the Sun moves round it creates shaded areas that extend right accors the width of the Arena.....I have decided I don't like indoor Equine events...but money pays the bills LOL

There seem to be many different ways of resolving WB challenges, i hope you find one that works for you :O)

In situations like this I wouldn't trust the camera's own metering so would try to meter off some grass or blue sky then recompose....generally the whole scene comes out balanced and the shimmering reflections in the water are not over exposed....trial and error :O)

Good luck...

I too have been thinking about getting this for my 7D but as this version is still in Beta form i've not d/l it yet, and to be honest I don't know how it will benefit me, especially as I don't shoot video... and does seem to lean towards video.

My way of thinking has always been, do I really need it and if so how will it improve my photography?...and this goes for cameras, lenses and accessories too :O)

I photograph Equestrian to a Professional standard and shoot with a 7D, 70-200 L IS F4, 1/1000 sec @ F4 mostly and when required I use Auto ISO and have taken many useable images at ISO 5000...

As for metering, I always look for something near mid gray, or green and you can also meter off the ground, even if it is the all weather stuff..I prefer to manually meter due to the many different shades of horses and riders...

My White Balance is set to 4500 Kelvin

Oh, and when it's bright use Tv as the shutter speed is far more important then the depth of field, and Manual when the light gets too low...I'm still learning too :O)

The image below is as shot (Raw) and has only been resized and saved as a jpg....

A few months ago I sold all my Nikon gear and bought a Canon 7D (refurbished) and as I only had a tad over £100 left i settled for the same lens....I was dubious at first but needed a lens with a good zoom, and the reviews were favourable so i bought it (both off fleabay). I have not regretted it, quality may not be 'L' standard but it is acceptably sharp and faster focussing than you would belive possible for the price.

I used it for my first Dressage shoot and my pro friend was very impressed, it's also gone to motocross and autograss racing with me, rugged but good....recommended!
