advice on a new lens please !Canon EF 55-200mm f/4-5.6 II USM
was really interested in buying this lens could anybody give any views? the seller has stated there is dust within the lens, should this worry me ?
This lens is in excellent condition with only the lightest signs of use. The glass is clean with no marks or scratches. There is some very light dust within the lens, which would not affect optical performance at all. The lens barrel shows only the lightest cosmetic marks. The focus ring is smooth and in great condition. The lens mount is in good condition.
Includes only:
Front Lens Cap
Rear Lens Cap
Condition: Exc++
Dust within the lens would worry me. Contact Canon or a certified Canon repair person and find out the cost of cleaning. If cost isn't much then I would make the sale conditional (refundable) on not finding any other issues by the repair/cleaning place.
I would check the local camera shop to price a new one, here Canada they they are not overly expensive.
It will broblem since you have to move " spots" out with healing tool etc. At specially if you shoot landscape images dust spot will show against a blue sky really bad.
I'll suppose you notice this lens it bit slow glass anyway.
Well 1st off, what is the budget for the new lens, where is the nearest service center for cleaning lenses? One thing to know is that this lens has hard plastic adapter ring to connect to camera. I have one the Canon EF 55-250 and there is a piece of the collar that has broken off. Canon could not tell me how much without seeing it, and it still locks in place so I still use it but glass is great. Have you looked else where for another one that is in better condition? These are some of the things I would think about before buying something and right off the bat have to send it off to clean instead of using it.
A few months ago I sold all my Nikon gear and bought a Canon 7D (refurbished) and as I only had a tad over £100 left i settled for the same lens....I was dubious at first but needed a lens with a good zoom, and the reviews were favourable so i bought it (both off fleabay). I have not regretted it, quality may not be 'L' standard but it is acceptably sharp and faster focussing than you would belive possible for the price.
I used it for my first Dressage shoot and my pro friend was very impressed, it's also gone to motocross and autograss racing with me, rugged but good....recommended!
99% of dust in lens will have no descernable impact on IQ, and 98% of ALL lenses have some dust in them !
You can buy that lens from a dealer brand new via ebay for less than £130 with Canon's 12 moth warranty why buy snd hand at that price
i must say thats a cracker of pic and considering it was taken with the usm 55-200 canon it really is tempting me to go usm over non usm even if it means secondhand over the brand new 55-250 is canon lens non usm of course coz i like the quality of thepic plus its available in a few e stores for around the £100 mark, sory for the l8 reply as ive been busy for once and thanx for ur input and stunning pic for reference
you can buy a new canon 50-250mm f/4 -5.6 usm ii with image stabilisation for just over £102 in the uk, threy should be cheaper in the USA or Canada, why buy snd hand at that price when new one has 12 months warranty
re,member the l series lens are far more expensive than the ef or efs if its a l series second hand that might be worth looking at.

first of sory for l8 reply to ur detailed response, at the time of posting the lens was the only one i found so i was tempted, since looking deeper there is a few up for grabs around the £100 mark so like ya said would probly steer clear of a lens that may need a service before i can even use it ! my budget is low end i only have about £130, i have a canon 600d body with the 18-55 and a 1.8 50mm so ime just short of a bit of reach and just need to no how to get the best bang for my buck as they say, any advice would greatly be welcome for the low end budget er ! the usm 55-200 looked a good lens coz i gather its quick and quiet lacks the extra reach of the canon 55-250 is which is on the net for around £130 right on my budget but is the smaller reach of the usm 55-200mm canon at around £100 secondhand ?
thanx for the advice, though i thought with it being usm it was pretty quick in comparison to say non usm ?
