Helmet liners, cartridge belts and canteens were the hot items at the surplus stores in my area. It was amazing what a dollar or two would buy you there on a Saturday morning!

Having been to Africa twice, I think your choice of lenses is very good. Some people exaggerate the importance of a super long lens for the game drives. The animals are quite used to the safari vehicles and you will be able to get surprisingly close without spooking them. I took a "bean bag" which was very useful in steadying the camera on the vehicle roof top or window ledge. An extra body is a plus so that you have both long lens and landscape lenses at the ready without having to change them in dusty conditions (although such conditions are also sometimes overstated). The extra lens is also an insurance policy, if something happens to one of them. Note: Neither B&H nor Adorama have stores out in the game parks!
Leave the tripod at home (not practical in the safari vehicles) . Make sure to bring camera/lens cleaning supplies so that you can clean your gear at days end. Have a great trip!

The Sigma 10-20 3.5 is a great lens. I bought mine after discovering that shooting in the narrow streets in New Orleans was difficult using regular lenses. Even backed up against the wall on one side of the street wouldn't allow me to get the subject matter framed on the other side. I have used it to take group photos and interiors of homes with great success. As far as third party lenses go, I think that Sigma is at the top of the list. Solid build and excellent quality!

Take extra batteries and a backup camera. There are no camera stores out in the bush! A bean bag would be helpful to steady you camera on the safari wagon roof.

Take the 24-70mm and the 70-200mm. The 24-70 will be perfect for a "walk around" lens (good for landscape, people, glaciers, etc). The 70-200 mm gives you the reach needed to shoot animals at a distance (or animals that you want to keep at a distance!).

They are both powerful experiences, but what makes Normandy different is 160,000 young men from the USA, Britain, Canada and France going into "harms way" to liberate Europe from the Nazis. Pearl Harbor was
a sneak attack by the Japanese where military and civilians were victims of the attack.

I was there on the bluff overlooking Omaha Beach a few years ago. Just standing there, looking down at the scene where so many young men charged ashore brought tears to my eyes. I am a two tour Vietnam vet, but I never experienced anything like what they went through. God bless them!

No need for such drastic measures! Printers are pretty cheap these days. Printer ink is a different story!

I have not attended any Kelby courses, but, if they are anything like his books, you are in for a treat at a bargain price. He has a great sense of humor and keeps his instructions simple and straight forward. In his words, it is like you are on a "photo shoot" together and you have asked him a "how to" question. He gives you an answer without a lot of technical "mumbo jumbo". I agree that you should be prepared to take notes or otherwise record the event, because you will be getting lots of info in a short period of time!

The first designated Vietnam Memorial Day was "underwhelming" in my area. Pretty sad!! Maybe next year there will be more organized events. Welcome home to all of my Vietnam War brothers and sisters!
