I have a Canon 5D mk3, I have several lenses including a 17-44mm f4, a fixed 50mm f1.2, a 24-70mm f2.8, and a 70-200mm f28. A friend of mine is selling a 24-105mm f4 at a really good price, $450, do i really need this lens? Thanks in advance hoggers.

It makes for a great general purpose lens (I used to own one), however with your lens line up I would not buy it.
Also keep in mind they tended to fail long before the should have (ribon cable problem). Mine failed at around 17,000 clicks.

It makes an unnecessary overlap, but, if you like the range, the lighter weight, and can afford it, it could become your daily walk-around.

The 24-105 is an excellent lens. This is my standard lens for wedding candids and groups. I have well over 75,000 clicks on two of them. I find this lens as sharp as any of my primes, excluding wide open shooting. But with the lens selection you have I wouldn’t get it.

...I would do a macro lens or a 200-600 telephoto lens before I would do a lens like that...you already have the range covered...

That's a great all purpose lens for travelling, when longer focal ranges are not required. Perfect for a full frame camera such as the one you own. You already have some very good lenses. Finally, you have to ask yourself. Do I really need this lens? Am I just tempted because it's a great price? Which it is.

I own the Canon 7D Mkii and the 6D and all of the lenses you mention here without the 50mm f1.2. I replaced my go to lens, 24-70 f2.8 when I purchased a used 24-105 f4 and have never regretted it. I like the extra reach for a walk around lens for my 6D camera. I use the 24-70 when I am shooting in low light situations and need that focal length. If you can afford the $450, go for it, I purchased mine for $500 about a year ago. Gary

Which focal lengths and which apertures do you use the most? (If you use Lightroom, it is easy to find out.) Then the question becomes, "What is the minimum set of lenses I need?"

Hmmm.
I'd probably make the 24-105 my walk around lens.

Need vs want. Need - no. Want - perhaps.

If you can't think of a reason why adding this lens to your arsenal of lenses would definitively improve your photography, then you probably don't need it.

None of your lenses cover the focal length range offered by the 24-105, so why not?

Need vs want will determine your choice.

I use a 28-105 and I have a 24-70 and 70-200, and 24, 45 and 85mm primes. If I only want to bring one lens with me I take the 28-105.

$450 is not a great price for an EF 24-105 f/4L, it's about average. When Canon introduced version II of that lens, the price dropped considerably.

Kind of depends on what you want to do in photography. Cannot make any kind of guess about your needs when you have not talked about...well...your needs. If you are doing relatively close sports work (like marathons) that lens could be very useful. If you do primarily macro work, then maybe not the perfect lens. If you travel to a lot of foreign cities, it might be great. So what is it you want to do?
